Beaver, loons, peace and quiet
We enjoyed our stay at The Get-Away. It was very quiet and peaceful. We saw a beaver while canoeing. The loons were amazing. It is a short drive from Kalkaska. It was a great basecamp for our day trip up the Leelanau Peninsula. Be prepared for mosquitos. The cabin sits a few inches above the lake. It can be very damp.
Has potential if fixed up
Pros: secluded location, access to a lake, canoes etc.
Cons: quality of mattresses (literally 4 inches thick), almost foot-deep ruts in the driveway/lane. Cabin has evidence of mice, bees. Owner was quite defensive when contacted about our experience, which I why I chose to write this review.
While we like rustic wilderness experiences, we shouldn't have to park a quarter mile away from the cabin because the owner hasn't invested in gravel for the driveway. The boat dock is very unsafe with boards unsecured and about to break. The cabin isn't even completely finished with typar house wrap flapping in the wind on the far side of the cabin.
Rustic cabin in the wilderness
My friend and I stayed at “The Get-Away” for a much needed escape from city life. We found the small caning off the beaten path. Douglas, was very communicative before our stay and provided ample firewood and detailed directions.
This was a very rustic experience and we enjoyed bathing out on the lake and soaking up some rays. We met some of the locals on a walk and they were interesting characters.
We enjoyed making s’mores around the fire and cooking on the grill. The light in the cabin was also a nice touch, since we wanted to play cards at night.
Overall, we had a really great stay and would recommend checking out Douglas’s rustic cabin if you’re looking for a peaceful weekend in the wilderness.
The perfect getaway
My boyfriend and I had a great time at the cabin. We stayed up late playing board games while listening to the loons and frogs. In the morning we made coffee over the stove and then went out on one of the canoes. We were out on the lake all day! My boyfriend caught a bunch of fish and I got to read some of my books that I brought with me. Great stay! Definitely recommend!
I had a great experience at the Get-Away and definitely plan on returning! The cabin and surrounding area were beautiful, and the host checked in with me multiple times via text to make sure my stay was going well.
