Peaceful, riverside camping in North Wales

Pitch your tent at Dolwen Riverside Camping for a peaceful stay in Denbighshire. This riverside meadow sits in the North Welsh countryside between the Clwydian Hills and Snowdonia. The peaks of the surrounding hills may not be as high as the neighbours but the scenery is still lovely: mature trees, green fields and a river that babbles by. The site is home to just eight off-grid, grassy pitches for tents and small campervans. Book one of them and you’ll soon be immersed in nature. You can listen to woodpeckers tapping away in the trees, watch red kites soaring in the sky above and perhaps even take a dip in the river before warming up by the campfire.

This is old-school camping of the back-to-basics variety – but all the basics are very well covered and done so in a pleasingly eco-friendly way. There are compost loos, showers with water that’s been warmed by solar power and recycling bins in the under-cover pot wash area. The site is endorsed by the Greener Camping Club which means you’ll need to be a member to stay, but signing up is an easy business (add as you book) and the association means you can trust in the eco credentials.

You might want to stick to keeping things green for days out and about. That might mean a walk around Llyn Brenig, a reservoir whose shores are just a few miles away where you have the chance of seeing ospreys. There’s kayak and paddleboard hire too. Or maybe you’d like to explore nearby Denbigh? This historic market town, with its castle ruins, town walls and independent shops, is a pleasant place to while away a few hours. Beyond the local sights, North Wales’ biggest natural attractions – the Preseli Hills, Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and the beaches of the north coast – are also all near enough for a day trip.

Beautiful stream side location.
Beautiful little paddock by a lovely stream, great for paddling and the occasional dip. Very peaceful, with a few other welcoming families and lovely, low-key, well-kept facilities. The owner David is fantastic, the perfect host, attentive, chilled and determined to ensure everyone is happy. Thank you very much. Looking forward to our next visit.

We are reluctant to tell everyone about this lovely campsite as we want to keep it all to ourselves! Peaceful, natural campsite in wonderful setting with clean and simple facilities and warm showers. Site is even nicer than the photos with very well spaced pitches by a lovely little river and friendly family atmosphere. A great friendly welcome and nothing was too much trouble.

Nearby attractions

Dolwen Riverside Camping is in the rural heart of North Wales, four miles outside the market town of Denbigh. You can visit the town’s ruined castle or walk the historic walls. There’s also a 1950s Museum on a farm on the outskirts of town with lots of memorabilia from the era. The Clwydian Range, a designated National Landscape, is a few miles further east with plenty of good walking and outdoor activity on offer. Its highest hill, Moel Famau, is about 16 miles from the campsite. In the other direction, a little further away, is the edge of Eryri National Park with more opportunities for adventure. Closer to the campsite, Llyn Brenig, offers waterside walks, watersports and birdwatching – with the osprey the champion species to look out for. Head for the visitor centre (eight miles) to hire kayaks, paddleboards and boats and to find out about the Llyn Brenig Osprey Project. The North Welsh coast is not far either with Abergele (16 miles) the closest beach and Colwyn Bay and Llandudno and all the attractions that go with them, not more than 30 miles away.

Food and drink

The closest shops and places to eat out are in Denbigh (four miles). There are plenty of shops to choose from including small supermarkets and a range of independents in the centre of town. For a meal out, perhaps try the family-run Con Amici Italian restaurant or head a little further for a great meal made with local produce at gastropub Nant y Felin (six miles). If you're enjoying a day at Llyn Brenig (eight miles), you can make use of the cafe at the visitor centre which offers plenty of Welsh options and has a little shop selling Welsh produce too. The Dinorben Arms is a scenic spot with outdoor seating on the edge of the Preseli Hills (eight miles) but if you’re headed for the coast at the weekend, perhaps stop off at The Kinmel Arms (14 miles) in St George Abergele, for a Sunday roast.
