I loved camping here with my family.
My partner & I camp a lot, it was the first time taking the family, they enjoyed it so much. We had so much privacy, we had a beautiful quiet peaceful time with waking up to the cows every morning, the river, horses it was beautiful. Bathroom was clean, showers were big and great. Overall, such a beautiful long weekend. Thanks to the host helping us as well, and waiting up for us to arrive late the Friday night.
Charming pitches, friendly staff, and pretty good facilities, Margaret and her son put on a fantastic weekend.
For an Easter weekend we had plenty of space for our camp, we were able to have a camp fire (remember to bring a fire pit so as not to scorch the ground) and we ended up cooking at the communal BBQ one night.
All round we had a wonderful time, one slight hinderance was a slightly overwhelmed lavatory situation but it was a very small issue in an otherwise perfect weekend.
There’s a variety of pitches depending on how rowdy you will be, and the land is along a one way road with at least four vineyards who do tastings along it.
For best results bring bikes or push scooters for a wine tasting trek as the vineyards are in both directions, Molly Morgan’s is a must see for sunset, book in for a tasting and watch the Roos amongst the vines as the sun goes down at the end of your Hunter experience!
Highly recommended for families, couples or small groups.
Horse riding on site, and the Emu dance is not to be missed!
Overall, we had a great experience. The staff was friendly and welcoming throughout our stay.
Thankfully, the campground wasn’t very busy despite the long weekend. This was important because there’s only one bathroom (toilet and shower in the same room) shared by all campers and day visitors who come for activities like horse riding. The bathroom had poor ventilation, the fan wasn’t working, and it wasn’t cleaned as often as it should have been, especially for such a heavily used facility.
The weather forecast predicted rain for the weekend, but we were lucky — it only rained on our last day. We decided to check out earlier, packed everything up, and cooked breakfast using the camp’s stove/BBQ area. However, due to the bad weather, all activities were canceled, and the staff was instructed to leave early. They closed the only gate providing access to the area and asked us to leave by jumping over the fence, as there was no pedestrian gate.
We initially refused, but no alternative solution was offered. In the middle of the rain, we had to lift all our cooking equipment and our 35+ kg dog over the fence to exit. To be clear, the staff wasn’t rude — they were simply following orders — but the situation was quite inconvenient and unsafe.
I recently stayed at Poppy’s Dam Paddock in Hunter Valley. The vibe was great, the facilities were good, and Margaret and the staff were very helpful. Highly recommend!
I loved camping at Hunter Valley Hill Top. The views are great and it is very peaceful. There is absolutely no road noise around, it is far from any roads. You can see horses, cows and kangaroos roaming in the neighbouring paddocks. There was one noisy group camped next to us, the rest of the campers were courteous. The toilets were fine, just a bit crowded due to the Easter long weekend. I would come back again.
Stayed one night and was really disappointed, especially for $180. Campsites aren’t designated and it’s hard to find a good spot, most of the area is uneven or sloped, with very limited flat ground. Facilities were dirty, which you can cop at a campsite, but not at this price point. No firepit provided, and ground fires aren’t allowed - but this isn’t mentioned anywhere in the listing. The location on Hipcamp is also incorrect; it sent us to a winery a few kilometres away. And when I tried the “Contact Host” button, it dialled my own number. Overall, not worth the money.
The place is huge, so you can keep your privacy. Facilities were clean and tidy. Lenny is the best host ever, he was always around in case you need support or help.
I would definetely go there again, so issues with campsite. plenty of room,
My only comment would be it costs $40.00 per person for the tractor ride, I understand it was for 45 mins and you stop to feed the animals and such but cost inhibitive for a family unit
Beautiful corner area with views of the horse and dams. First day toilets and showers were wonderful and great . We had nice trees to shade us in the day and the wind was very still this time of the year. Hosts were very informative and helpful. Our battery ran out and they didn’t hesitate to help use charge twice and even a third if we just brought it over .
Beautiful and charming spot, very peaceful and Margaret and her son are delightful.
Thank you for offering such wonderful experience in such beautiful place for campers.
Thanks Margaret and Lenny!
We had a lovely time and appreciated your hospitality and access to toilets and hot showers..
The kids also loved the horse riding and slurpees
Thanks again
Great spot with the possibility of going for horse riding and/or kayak at the local lake.
Staff very friendly and willing to help.
Definitely going back
Beautiful location and nice people. Unfortunately, the camping element of the Hilltop business seems to be an afterthought. I paid $ 180 a night to pitch your tent in a paddock full of horses shit with minimal shade, and access to facilities that I would be expect in that price range.
I recently visited this camping ground for the second time, having previously been there in the fall, which was an amazing experience with plenty of fellow campers. However, my summer visit revealed some issues. The camping area was quite dirty, with horse dung scattered about and the grass dried up. I wouldn't recommend this location for summer camping.
Additionally, I found the camping fees to be on the higher side, especially considering the amenities and overall experience.
We booked for 3 nights, left after 2. Poo (?horse) in an open paddock with not much shade.
Tractor rides are $40 per person so pretty expensive for a family to do...$40 for 10min pony ride.
Good if you plan on doing some horse riding in but probably a one night stay is enough
We were very disappointed with our stay. At $180 AUD per night, one would expect a certain standard for a camping site. The description mentioned access to water, but this turned out to be a single faucet on a building. When asked, one staff member wasn’t even sure if the water was safe for drinking.
The campsite itself had almost no shade, despite the photos giving the impression of more trees. There was only one toilet with a shower, located far from the camping area, which was highly inconvenient, especially with a small child. This toilet was shared with guests from the horse-riding tours, making it even less accessible. One toilet is simply not enough, and it was dirty and smelled bad.
There was also no place to wash dishes, which is a basic amenity for any camping site.
On the positive side, the view is beautiful, and the presence of the animals adds a nice touch. However, the price of $180 per night is outrageous for what you get.
Amazing place with great views of the valley! We got upgraded to the hill top and were so impressed. Margaret was lovely, super friendly and accommodating. Would absolutely return.
Owners and staff were really lovely. Lots of activities and animals to see. Beautiful backdrop.
For camping, we were at the top and while it was flat, there were a few things that may be okay for some but was noticeable for our camping experience that we didn’t like compared to other camping grounds we have been to.
Lots of animal poo on the camping ground that you have to dodge and being close to the animal yard, we could smell the poo. We had brought an activity kit (cricket, volleyball, badminton etc) to play on the camping ground but couldn’t due to the scattered poo.
If you are expecting public amenities, be prepared to wait for the one toilet/shower, otherwise, you will need to use the portaloos. Portashowers were there but not useable.
Would consider coming there for the day to access their activities but not so much for camping.
