Welcome to Whippletree! Our family established this farm in 1869 and it has been in continuous agricultural production ever since. Currently we produce eggs, honey, hops and fruit crops. We seasonally offer these food items at our wayside stand right on the farm. Besides tillable farm land, we are stewards of native prairie, small wooded areas, a remnant of an oak savanna and wetlands, with trails throughout. We consider this our sanctuary and enjoying sharing it with others looking for a place of retreat to connect with the natural world. Stop by for a visit!

Farm Stay Cabin & Nature Trail
We had a great stay. We brought a small camper van and a couple of teenagers. The kids stayed downstairs in the retro-fitted grain shed and the grown-up in the van. It was cool enough at night to have a fire in the cabin and that was cozy. We had everything we needed and the hosts were gracious enough to show us around the farm and teach us a thing or two about it's history. We brought a bike and runner and they enjoyed the local trails. It was a great little MEA getaway.

Highly recommend!! Our weekend camping trip here was great! The proximity to the cities made it a low stress trip and having stores (and Stillwater) nearby made things super convenient! The site itself was great and well kept. There were no other tent campers but it is close to the trails so other guests may pass by but it’s no problem at all. The broader farm area is peaceful and has a few animals (goats, chicken, the cutest cat). The facilities are well kept and only a short walk from the campsite. Peter was a great host and available for any questions. We’ll definitely be back!

I had a great time at the cabin, and the wood stove made it comfortable despite the fall chill (though as the description says, I wouldn't go much colder than 30 degrees!). The goats are friendly and fun, and I had a lovely chat with Peter while meeting the goats. The path back through the woods is a pleasant ramble as well.

Photography sessions!
The host Peter was just fantastic! Made sure If I needed anything my entire stay. Peter let me do photography sessions in his farm and the goats and chickens were such a highlight for the kids! The main barn is absolutely stunning. The cabin was great for clients who had littles who needed to change, and was perfect for setting up a snack and drinks bar for my clients. Fresh honey for sale. Can’t wait to be back!

Very nice property to stay at, especially with children. Farm animals provide great entertainment. Unfortunately I was just passing through, so I didn’t get to explore fully. The site was clean, and additional amenities like the outhouse were nice to have and well taken care of.

Welcoming Campsite
Camping on Peter’s farm was fantastic! In addition to having a stunning campsite, you can expect Peter to be incredibly hospitable and welcoming (see the delicious donuts he gifted us). The campsite is a quick drive from the Twin Cities and Stillwater is a short 10 minute drive away to tool around for some shopping or lunch. It was a great weekend!

Camping the farm life.
This was a great rustic place to stay. The cabin is full of character. The area was nice and quiet with a great little hiking trail around some wetlands. I even got to hear some sandhill cranes fly over. The weather turned very nasty one night. Peter, our host, checked in to see if we needed anything and to let us know where to go in case the tornado sirens started going off.

Fun on the Farm
Nice farm and property close to the Twin Cities. Peter was very cordial and attentive while allowing us space to relax. Our 3 year old loved the animals and walking the trails nearby. Do yourself a favor and order the donuts! They were delivered hot and fresh in the morning and were definitely a highlight. We did hear some traffic noise from the freeway at night so I would recommend earplugs (which they provide for free!) but all in all a very wonderful stay.

Great spot!
Enjoyed our night - took a quick stroll around the trails, saw sand hill cranes (very cool!), met the goats and chatted with the hosts. Easy to final, nice and quiet - a perfect place to stay. Only 30 min from airport which was helpful for catching an early flight - highly recommend.

Charming farm camping!
We loved this place! The property is absolutely gorgeous, and charming, and the campsite is secluded and quiet. The kittens and goats and chickens are so sweet. We had three deer visit us twice in an evening too! Peter and his family were so inviting and we enjoyed delicious homemade donuts in the morning. The facilities were clean and well kept. The little milk lounge would be a cozy little spot on a rainy day as well. We will definitely be back!

Our stay was wonderful. We RV camped and the spot was nice and flat with a fire ring and picnic table. The outhouse was very clean and cutely decorated. The farm is close enough to drive into Minneapolis. I highly recommend.

Everything from directions, finding our campsite, to the layout of the grounds was so impressively explained on the Hipcamp site description and when he messages you personally as your trip comes up. He’s very attentive and though we only met him briefly, he let us know throughout the day if he was gone or working in case we needed to reach him. Camp sites were not far walking distance but certainly had good amount of privacy. Would highly recommend this spot to stay!

Perfect Spot! So Close to MSP!
We had a great time camping at Whippletree Farm! The directions were easy to follow and the camp donuts were delicious—definitely worth the add on! We enjoyed exploring the trails on the property and were able to see some cool wildlife. Peter was kind enough to recommend a fun mountain biking spot (only ~10 minutes away!) after seeing that we brought our bikes. Would totally recommend this spot. Thanks again for a great stay!

Farm Stay Cabin & Nature Trail
Wonderful & Wonder-filled
A longtime friend, my granddaughter and I have an annual autumn tradition of a camping overnight. As we head into October, weather is always a central variable. We've been rained and snowed upon in tents which makes for great stories later, not necessarily enjoyment at the time. Right away, the fact that Peter could offer either tent or cabin, made Whippletree Farm an easy choice. Plus, the short drive to Lake Elmo from the Cities, ensured we'd still have some light in which to explore, even departing after school pickup. Arriving late afternoon, we had time to settle into the cabin, make the acquaintance of the free-range chickens, and explore the nature trails which were beautiful and varied and even gave us a glimpse of three sandhill cranes. Because my granddaughter's at that 'tween age, it can sometimes be tough to gauge her reaction to things separate from her peers. It was truly a delight to see her still captivated by nature - as relaxed and conversant as my friend and I were star-gazing, hearing the yip of coyotes or crowing of roosters or just hanging out indoors near the wood-burning stove. Peter restored us next morning with crispy-warm cinnamon doughnuts to accompany our farm-fresh eggs. Afterward, he invited us to meet his small herd of buckthorn-eating goats. A favorite photo now is my granddaughter, smiling, eyes closed, leaning gently into the neck of her four-legged friend. Five stars from all three of us! With sincere thanks to Peter (and his family) for hosting us, while honoring generational and indigenous connection through stewardship of this land.

A sweet spot for a family getaway.
This is a great location, close to the city making it really convenient for family camping. The hosts are friendly, responsive. Not only is it a sweet little spot for a quick getaway, the hosts welcome conversation about their relationship with the land and their plans. Visit the goats, walk the trails, take in the oak savannah and the sounds of farm life.

Charming farm campsite for friends
A great visit on this quaint farm with plenty of sky, fresh eggs, friendly owners and cute guests (goats, chickens, kitties). A little bit of highway noise competed with the rooster, but it didn't distract from the sandhill cranes, deer, owl and birds we witnessed. The fresh coffee and homemade donuts in the morning near your tent can't be beat! A great and easy getaway from the city and very close to bike trails...

Unplug and unwind at the farm!
It was a very peaceful getaway that helped me recharge. The cabin was nice with comfortable beds. I enjoyed walking the trails right on the property where I encountered goats, great blue herons, honey bees, chickens and just a pleasant walk. I hung out in the milk lounge to do some work on my computer but quickly found myself back at the cabin enjoying the relaxing vibe of being "unplugged". I was fortunate that the weather was perfect and the breeze flowed through the cabin keeping it just the right temperature. My only regret is not ordering the optional coffee and eggs. I will next time!

Peter is a great host who really cares about this farm, which has been in his family for generations. My wife and I enjoyed walking the nature trails and found the site and facilities to be very clean and well maintained. We stayed at site 2 which is among the farm buildings, but it was still peaceful and picturesque.

This was one of my favorite Hipcamp experiences to date! The directions were very clear and so helpful. The chickens were lovely and two little cats walked with us on our way to the campsite. The outhouse was adorable, the campsite was very peaceful. It was close enough to the cities for a quick night stay, but quiet and rural enough to feel like camping.

Beautiful Oasis within city reach
The accommodations were beyond our expectations, loved the nature trails and saying hello to the goats and chickens. Got some eggs, coffee and donuts. They were all amazing and the host, Peter, was friendly and gave us an amazing recommendation to check out Jay Cooke State Park and Duluth 2 hours North. (We went the next day and it was breathtaking!)

We loved our stay at Whipple Tree, and will definitely be back! Peter and family were amazing hosts who have created a great space on their land for others to enjoy. From a private camp site, to hiking/walking trails, and even a front porch to sit on we found little need to explore the surrounding area, which also offered fun recreational activities close by: mountain bike trails, nature center, a lake, the gateway bike trail, etc. Whipple Tree is our new favorite spot to camp!
