Matt’s site was a great place for us this weekend. The location was amazing! It was so close to the beach and river. We spent some time exploring the Porcupine Mountains and it was great to not have to drive far after the visit was over to get to Matt’s site.

We couldn't find a spot to reserve at campsites in the Porkies, so looked at Hipcamp and found this spot, only 20 min from the visitor center. It proved a great launching off point for our many excursions. We stayed 3 nights.
The pros ... the hosts could not be nicer! Lake Superior is a quick walk away and the beach was nearly empty every time we went. Free wifi, electric hookup, water refill and if you need it a bathroom (we didn't use it). Their dog Jax is the cutest and very friendly, but he stayed away when called. We also enjoyed the town and checked out 2 ice cream spots (one is less than a block away, which was a big hit with the kids). My son enjoyed fishing nearby.
FYI ... the location is on the edge of the small downtown but you feel like you are in a commercial district (sort of). You will park in a private lot behind a long two-story tudor building that has a mix of residences and businesses. Across the street is the VFW. At the end of the street is a large factory on the beach (which was mostly quiet minus some large noises for 10 minutes Sunday at 6.30 am). We did not face the direction of the tudor building and instead had a view into the nice lawn and river that flows into Lake Superior. There was a large ferry docked in the middle.
It wasn't the quiet, private idyllic place I had made up in my head but the description is accurate. It worked for us and had plenty to offer.

Small walk to the brightest sunset
We would certainly stay here again. It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, then came to the small cozy town, drove through the town and ended up at Matt’s place at the end of town. We parked our van on his property right on the canal facing a historic lighthouse. It a brief walk to the beach. We collected our own drift wood and made a fire at sunset. (We recommend breakfast at Syl’s place..) The proximity to the beach is what we loved most. Also, Matt was a genuinely nice gentleman to talk to upon arrival.

Large mowed yard with dispersed trees next to the river. Electric fence serves as a boundary between yard and river. The lake is very close. It is on the other side of a large industrial building. I would have liked to have a campfire near our tents. There is a centralized fire pit next to the hosts screened patio. You can also have fires on the beach which was pretty awesome. The hosts were friendly, the bathroom was clean, and their fire wood was free

Awesome camping spot!
Really wonderful camping spot! We camped right next to the water, and were within walking distance of the beach and town. The hosts were very friendly, and their dog Jax is extremely polite and checked in from afar with some inquisitive eye contact before coming over to see us (his visits were most welcome :)

Awesome hosts and location
First, Matt & Kandice are super nice hosts - very friendly, loved chatting with them by the fire at night! Their dog Jax was a sweetheart, and my kids loved playing with the dog in the yard and jumping on the trampoline.
This was our first hipcamp experience, and it was definitely different then what we are used to!
We have a pop-up, and true to info, we parked in the parking lot, with our site fronting the grass and river views. We were able to level easily. Views were beautiful, could see the lighthouse from where we were! You are at the back of their building complex in Ontonagon, but you cannot beat the location-literally across the street from the beach.
Water and electric were provided no issue as noted, and the bathroom was indoors, clean and well stocked!
Ontonagon is a true to form small town-some restaurants, bars, two ice cream options (we tried both, were delicious), grocery store less than 5 min away. We also trekked into Twin Lakes for pasties and visited local waterfalls.
Definitely recommend their site, friendless on par, location awesome for the River and the beach, town is charming.

This was a special little spot for our kids and dogs to enjoy! Matt was helpful with directions and getting us situated. We arrived near dinner time and enjoyed Syl’s Cafe down the road from our RV. Our only complaint, which was not the fault of our host, is the traffic outside of the site. The night was filled with local traffic cruising the streets, revving their engines and congregating under a shelter near our site. It was a distraction on the otherwise beautiful evening.

Riverfront spot
Nice little green grassy spot to park our RV for a few days. Had water and electric. Matt was very helpful getting us set up. Right on a river and very close to Lake Superior beach. Our dog had fun playing with theirs.

Beautiful, private location
Matt and Kandice were wonderful hosts, very thoughtful, friendly and considerate. My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate a moment to stay again and to recommend to our friends. Honestly, the pictures on HipCamp don't do the place justice. It's a beautiful and private location right next to the river and seconds from Lake Superior. 10/10

Not as described, do not recommend
Extremely disappointed in the site. Description of property having one site was false as another tent was set up when we arrived. That tent was set in the middle of the lot which left a site area near one dead tree or a line of dead trees. We ended up having a tree limb go through our tent... try replacing a tent during covid for the remainder of a week and half trip. The basic description of the property says campfires allowed and pets allowed. Only upon expanding those (after we received the site rules) did we see that campfires are only allowed at the host patio and dogs are only allowed after conversation with the host. Thankfully we left our dog home due to not being allowed at another location further in our trip. We have asked the host about replacement coverage for our tent... still waiting to hear back.

Would definitely recommended!
Great place to stay! It’s very open and there is a good amount of freedom when camping here. Within 18 minutes of the Porcupines and the town is literally walking distance for food or supplies. Plus the public is within walking distance too. There is also one fire pit available which I quite a bit. The hosts are very nice and welcoming. The only two things I would knock them on is there was no picnic table To eat at and i couldn’t drive across the grass to unload my things out of my car but overall a great place to stay.

Beautiful Location!
Host was informative and gracious. Many places close to enjoy outdoor activities. We missed the beach walk because of rain, but enjoyed our stay and the town of Ontonagon!

Nice spot by beach
Perfect location right by Lake Superior. Stayed three nights and it was nice to have power provided by the hosts. We parked our trailer out in the well kept lawn and it was great.

Awesome Location & Host
We loved camping in Matthews beautiful lawn and taking short walks over to the Lake Superior Public Beach. The beach is beautiful for sunsets and beach fires. The town is very convenient with a few stores and restaurants just 20 minutes from the Porcupine Mountain State Park. Definitely more private here than at a state park campground. We had awesome cell service the whole time at our site as well. Made it easy to work from our camper for a day!

We needed a campsite for a night and this was the first time using this app. We contacted the host the night before our stay and everything worked out great. It’s a different experience then normal camping at a site but I was pleased there was a restroom. 👍🏻

Matt was quick to respond to all our questions ahead of our stay. Pleasant. Helpful.
Honestly though, if you’re looking for quiet & peaceful, you’ll be really disappointed; the private grounds were situated directly adjacent to a very noisy manufacturing facility which kept hours not conducive to a camper’s rest and relaxation interests. Also, we should have clarified the online description as this was not a single-site setting a perfect pick for a COVID summer getaway; masks were not worn by owners upon face to face greeting.
Yes, you could walk to the public access of Lake Superior through the cluttered VFW parking lot. The grounds at Matt’s we’re nicely mowed with several beautiful trees providing lovely shade and beauty.

Very friendly hosts and beautiful property. Can't beat the location on the riverfront with Lake Superior beach being a 5 minute walk away. This was the perfect spot for us to explore the Porcupine Mountains.

A very fine unorthodox placeto stay
This place was as advertised. Matt and KJ were very friendly. It was a very convenient drive from here to the Porkys and and the location adjacent to the public beach on Lake Superior made the morning coffee that much nicer. Only suggestion would be a picnic table.

Great stay
Matt was a great host and the spot was perfect. The camp site was right on the river, which allowed a cool breeze into the tent. Directly across the street is Lake Superior Public Beach- wonderful sunset views and sandy beach. There is one fire Pitt at Matt’s but you can also have a fire on the beach. Definitely recommend.

Convenient and clean!
Matt was very nice and his directions were clear. I did like that I had access to a bathroom with indoor plumbing. The site is semi-private. It worked for our needs. It was a couple minute walk to the public beach, as well as to downtown - very convenient! I would definately stay again if I'm in the area.

My husband and another couple were able to secure a spot at Matt and KJs place. They were very welcoming, had a bathroom (no shower) and tent space by the river. There was one other tent but we had space from them. Matt and KJ had a fire on and welcomed us to join them. Otherwise, you can walk a short distance to the public beach on Lake Superior and have your own fire. We did that and enjoyed a swim. We were a short distance from town so we hit a local bar, but there isn’t too much to do. Enjoying the beach was nice, plus we were close to Porcupine Mountains for hiking. I’d stay here again.
