At the corporate retreat, we live a recreational-type lifestyle. That doesn't mean we don't work hard...We ride ATVs, fish, work on the property and enjoy our solitude and privacy. Peace, tranquility, privacy, and a safe environment for your stay are a priority. Cox Cable internet/wifi is available for free. The water here is from a deep well. Feel free to take a jug of it with you. You won't find a more delicious water source that is unfiltered, untreated by any chemicals or tampered with in any way. It is neither hard nor soft and has no odor. I have personally been nourishing my body with it for over 6 years now.

Pit Stop
This plot is a perfect budget stop. Damon is a great host and has a very friendly small dog that will hang out around the site. I would definitely recommend checking this spot out.

Good overnight spot
We parked at Damon’s spot for one night. It’s a short drive outside downtown Baton Rouge, you drive through some more rural roads that aren’t very well-lit if you’re arriving at night and there’s lots of debris along the side of the road on the way to Damon’s. The spot itself is a cleared area in the grass nearby the water and a home. Damon brought out an extension cord for us and had a camping toilet and garbage can set out for us when we arrived. We were right near the water, which made for a nice view. Bring bug spray and a bright light, because the mosquitoes are intense (as expected) and it’s very dark out there after sundown. I brought my dog and he had a good time sniffing around the property. There are some loose dogs that live a little ways down the road but shouldn’t be a problem if you stay on the property. Overall, I’d stay there again.

Overall it was fine for what I needed. As others have mentioned, the listing could be more clear that the shower is just a garden hose and the campsite itself is basically just a grassy parking space off the driveway, but I was aware of that going in. I was, however, a little caught off guard that the "toilet" was just a 5-gal Home Depot bucket. Not my thing. As someone traveling and sleeping in my car, it's a slight step up from a Walmart parking lot, but probably not worth the $50+ dollars it ended up being after fees. That said, I do believe if you have a different set up and needs, and have more time to hang out and relax, it could be a very nice stay. The lake looked cool, there's a fire pit, and an extension cord for power that runs to the site.

Site was beautiful next to the pond. Plenty of wood to burn around the area, and Damon offered us to use his boat to troll around the pond. I would definitely go back for another trip.

Don't waste your money
I am a little frustrated with this stay, or lack there of. I was under the impression that there was a shower, and wifi, which is what is stated in listing. These are two big factors for someone who is camping out or van traveling. First, there was no shower; it was a water hose, I'm going to say that again, a hose. Mind you, it is currently 50 degrees at night in Louisiana. Second, and most importantly, there is no wifi; there is not even a cell signal. The "wifi" is so slow, that is is nonexistent, it is unusable, thus should not be listed. I didn't even have cell service to use google maps to leave. Also, there were no lights going to or entering the property whatsoever, it is completely pitch black. On top of this, it is not a campsite, but someones driveway. The spot for parking is just a driveway. Not even cleared out, just an open space among the leaves and sticks. I didn't even stay the night. Complete waste of money and time.

Cajun Swamp Camping
Damon was a sweetheart and helped me get situated in the dark. Recommended for smaller rigs… I had a long bad crew cab pulling a 26 foot trailer and it was pretty tough to maneuver in and out of the spot. It’s out in the boonies with a real Cajun swamp feel!

Great host, site is a mixed bag.
This place is in a really beautiful location. Close to Baton Rouge but set back in rural Prairieville, with a very old Louisiana Bayou feel. Damon is Very Nice, and helpful. He lives on a quiet loop on a pond. His little dog is the sweetest. His friends, neighbors and kid are really nice. Downsides are that there is a lot of trash at the property and site. Site is not suitable for rigs bigger than a pop up camper or van, due to narrow, tree lined, small uneven ground areas. Sleep is interrupted by a Very loud generator/motor type noise a few times each night, and very bright lights off the deck of the main house all night. Damon was really flexible about our needs and usage of the property. There's a lot of good to be said about this place, but a few things that just made it hard to be comfortable.

This made for a fairly easy and peaceful overnight stop while on a road trip through the south. The property could use a little tidying up to feel more inviting, but otherwise safe and serene. Damon was responsive and made sure I had what I needed.

Did not end up spending the night, reached site to see that it was practically a backyard, and unbeknownst to us, another person living yards away.

Such a sweet respite nearby Baton Rouge. A little Cajun swamp camping. Next time it would be great to get on the water. Lots of wildlife!

Nice spot, ask ahead about privacy!
Damon was fine. He had a hobo friend of his staying there who actually walked up on my daughter trying to pop a squat. She laughed but was very embarrassed. The hobo friend was camping in a tent as well, so the 1 group minimum is false. The hipcamp site also said there were trash bins and bathrooms available, both are false! We camped at his backdoor, which was “ok” but his friends dog kept interrupting our stay by getting into our fishing zone and tackle. Damon, himself, was a great host, he even offered us coffee on Saturday morning. I do not wish to take my kids camping and deal with conspiracy theorist hippies when I wish to enjoy the outdoors though. Damon is not the one I complain about.

Very pretty area!
Cool spot. Host was friendly and the property was pretty. Had a nice fire right by the water. Fell asleep to owl hoots and a beaver chewing reeds a ways off. Particularly beautiful on a foggy morning.

Pretty awkward stay
The place is a little rough, its a tight space for a 4 man tent, and you camp out basically right next to a persons house.

Unfortunately, just before our stay, Damon's property was severely flooded from storm surge in the local river. Damon was quick to let us know the situation, and was very understanding if we wanted to change our plans. Luckily, his property drained quickly and we were able to find a nice dry piece of land to camp for the night. Our host's dogs were very friendly, as were the neighbors we met. There was plenty of dry wood around for our campfire too. This is not a glamping resort; but if you are comfortable finding and setting up your camp it's a great place for some bayou hospitality.

Horse Shoe Bend is a great place to experience southern Louisiana's unique river and bayou-shaped landscape. First, the drive-in to the Baton Rogue-area via the Afatchalaya Basin Bridge is something you can only experience in Louisiana. Do it. Once you arrive you can camp near the pond next to Damon's stilt cabin or, as we did, near the fire pit at the entrance to the property. The site offers plenty of shade under the massive trees even in July. The lot is situated right next to a pond and a few hundred feet from an Amite River boat launch. A walk along Horseshoe Bend will give you a tour of the unique architecture that allows residents to live near the wild rivers. Next time we come through we could see ourselves staying the night and then launching our canoe from the Amite landing toward Lake Maurepas and beyond.
