Learn more about this land: As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. Recovering from a wildfire the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you also take advantage of. Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center, septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive.  The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared.  You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land, but is only recommended for pitching a tent.  Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills.  Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig.  There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet.  Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land.  If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Beautiful sky!
This was a great site it you want the feel of dispersed camping without having to stay to far from the road or worry about getting a spot. We set-up on top of the mesa - 2 families with 2 trailers - room for us both. The night sky was gorgeous! The dogs loved being able to frolic freely. Kiddos likes exploring and roaming about. Be forewarned this site is super exposed so if there is any wind you will definitely feel it, also no shade if you are heading out in hotter months. Overall a great spot to spend the night while exploring the area and wanting to avoid the crowds and constriction of a campground or RV park.

The property has beautiful views and for us, very private. We were the only ones there. The lower areas were a little grown up but the upper area was perfect. Keep in mind, the road is a little rough getting up. We have a Jeep pulling a small teardrop so it wasn’t too bad but if you have something bigger, it might be a little tough.

Magical place!
So private and beautiful! Exactly what we wanted. I think we saw one car driving down the road the entire weekend we were there. Great for enjoying the sand dunes (about 40 min drive) and there’s a BUNCH of 14ers in the area, great base camp that we will keep in mind for future adventures! We also could see the Milky Way every night! This place is truly magical

The area was beautiful and there were two established camp fire pits. The people who were before us left a mess - we were pulling glass, cans, cigars, etc out of the pit and surrounding area which was concerning since I brought my dog. The campers before us also left an easy up frame on the premises. Other than that, the views were beautiful and the instructions were clear. The location was close enough to the Sand Dunes but far enough away for privacy and clear night skies.

Arrived at dark...
We arrived after dark and set up without really seeing the lay of the land. Imagine our surprise in the morning to see the gorgeous and vast open mountains surrounding us. Beautiful land! Great views of Mount Blanca! Reasonable drive to the sand dunes. Would stay again.

Very beautiful, secluded space
We enjoyed our stay here. The view is absolutely stunning and we had the entire site to ourselves. Warning, low profile cars beware. I have a 4 door sedan and had a tricky time getting to the site. There is cell service which was nice but no one is around for miles. Good directions on how to get to site. Toilet is you digging a whole in the ground and using a tire for a seat. No real toilet on site. Please be careful with fires as there are high winds and wildfires are common in the area! We would stay again

Awesome spot to set up a tent and enjoy the solitude and the views. The kids and the dogs rambled all over the place and slept hard. We'll stay again next time we're playing in the sand.

Great spot!
Absolutely gorgeous views to wake up to! Loved seeing the snow capped mountains in the distance. Definitely plan to come back! Barry is a great host. He let us know ahead of time that it would be windy and the current fire ban so we could plan ahead. Directions were great and easy to find even at night. The dogs had a blast running around!

Peaceful place to enjoy the stars.
Loved camping here. Was great to have a campfire and enjoy the nightsky. This site is large and there were many spots to set up camp. I chose a spot on the higher level and enjoyed the sunsets. I didn't need to talk to Barry much but he was very quick and responsive when I did. Also, I had 4g service (VZW) in a few spots.

A fun camping trip!
The land was incredible and gave lots of opportunity to explore. Sadly, it was too overcast for us to see many stars, but the pops of moonlight through the clouds were so beautiful and bright. We saw a couple dear on our first day and were serenaded by coyotes on our second night, but no other wildlife run ins besides those. The drive to The Great Sand Dunes was also easy. I absolutely recommend staying here!

Very nice spot that was easy to get to and had some even nicer views! This was my first Hipcamp experience and Barry was great. Provided easy to follow directions and was quick to reply to any questions.
