The Waipi'o Lodge is located in the quaint village of Kukuihaele, less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. A place where neighbors are welcoming and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy the wonderful ocean view and many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We enjoy the best weather on the island- not hot like Kona, not rainy like Hilo, not cold like Waimea… just perfect!! It’s also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. Just 10 minutes away is the lovely town of Honokaʻa, with farmers markets, antique shops, restaurants, and the coolest old movie theater in the world.
Our three guest rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated, clean, with great beds. Guests share a bathroom, outdoor patio and living room with high speed Wi-Fi, couches, cable TV, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and grill. We are a "green" facility which is cleaned and laundered with non-toxic cleaning products. Guests may also pick ripe fruit from the yard. When in season, we have all the fruit you can eat! (Tangerines, macadamia nuts, guava, avocados, bananas…) Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Asia, Australia and beyond.
The Waipʻo Lodge Kalo Room is the coolest room in the house. Its windows allow the mountain breeze to flow through, but no direct sunlight. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: you can sometimes hear small footsteps from upstairs. If you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place.
We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi’o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the Lodge as a launching point for hiking trips.

Waipio Lodge is a friendly place to stay with various accommodations. Its even good for groups as yhere are two very lage tents on platforms to accommodate groups. Also there is a choice of three rooms that open into a common living area, with shared restroom, and shared cooking facilities and a full size fridge. The host puts out fruit and eggs from the property which is a very nice touch.
Beautiful and peaceful place to rest for the night with stunning Waipi’o Valley only a mile down the road. This property has it all...comfortable rooms, indoor/outdoor showers, a kitchenette, a shared social space to interact with other travelers, awe inspiring views of the Pacific from the patio, fresh fruit on the property, and most importantly, extremely accommodating and hospitable hosts. Would highly recommend to anyone traveling in the northern area of the Big Island, with a desire to check out the dramatic Hamakua Coast!
