Located in the hills and high forests of Hohenwald, Tennessee, Calico Junction Ranch is a large, multi-faceted operation with over forty head of horses, breeding kennels for Long-Coat German Shepherds, and a modest Heritage Breed Hog farming operation. Occupied by Native Americans as early as 10,000 BC, the Chickasaw Indians hunted our hills in the 1500's, and the ranch property is located along the Cherokee "Trail of Tears." The ranch was later home to a miner named "Grizzly Jack"... You can visit his cabin during your stay. More recently, Calico Junction hosted benefits for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and we regularly host dinner trail rides on weekends. Calico Junction New Beginnings Ranch is our non-profit 501(c)3 providing Equine Assisted Therapy and a horse rescue. Because Calico Junction has so much to offer, we have joined Hipcamp in order to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful and relaxing ranch home. Learn more about this land: Pitch your tent in a beautiful meadow not far from a pasture with horses. Choose a site close to the main ranch or as remote as you prefer. We are a family-oriented operation where children are welcome. Explore the ranch on foot or arrange for a horseback ride or two. Bring your binoculars and get up early to catch the Great Blue Herons feeding near the bridge. You'll probably disturb them, but if you're quick, you may capture a picture of the Heron's graceful flight. Go wading, collect rocks or hunt for arrowheads in Rockhouse Creek--you are almost certain to find them, the best free souvenirs! Take nature walks to see our abundant wildlife: deer, wild turkeys, foxes, rabbits and squirrels, because they play here too! Tour the kennels and walk or brush the dogs upon request. Tell stories or play your guitar as you enjoy a relaxing evening campfire. Then listen to the Whippoorwills as they serenade you to sleep. You must arrive 1 hour prior to sunset.

Calico Junction Ranch
He didn’t give that good of directions to the camp. I didn’t feel comfortable so I didn’t stay there. He never refunded me either.

Great campsite and ranch!
This campsite was gorgeous! So much privacy and we were right next to the beautiful horses. The owner and farm worker were incredibly nice and welcoming. They helped us out when we locked the keys in the car, brought us anything we needed and took us on a beautiful horse ride on the property. I would 100% go back!

Beautiful forest camping site!
It was awesome getting to see the dogs and horses and have a relaxing night by the pond. It’s quiet and serene. There’s even horseback riding available (although we didn’t go on one)

Calico Junction Ranch
Cheap horseback riding.
It is a nice size ranch with 30 so horses for trail rides. We did not end up staying at the Ranch. We only stopped in and went for a short horseback ride as we were pressed for time. It is a beautiful drive to the property, we have Verizon and had lost signal on the way out to the ranch. We were pulling our RV and had no troubles getting to the ranch. Once there we were instructed to park, as if we were going to be staying there, in a large grassy area with a few large piles of firewood around it. The first problem we noticed was when we got out of the truck was it smelled of poop horribly (not like horse manure but poop) once we were walking around we noticed many large piles of dog poop scattered everywhere in the grassy area, where I presume campers/RV would be staying. We went for a one hour ride and learned a little about the horses. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable of the horses. There are steep hills covered in loose rocks which I was worried was bad for the horses legs as I could feel the legs of the horse I rode twist and stumble from the large loose rocks under his hoof. The ride was not spectacular in anyway just going through some steep hills and many of the same type of trees. They did have an old log cabin at the end of the ride that the kids got to write their names on, that was the only sight we saw. One of the horses was coughing, another was passing gas, they seemed pretty old and possibly a little over used. Cheap horseback riding prices $20 per hour per rider, then you are encouraged to tip your guide (as they only get the tips). Not a bad place to visit but also not something to drive out of the way to go to.

Not for Pampered Campers! :D
We had a great time. I recommend it to my friends and family, and anyone else who would enjoy waking up to horses and beautiful country. We ate at the Rocking Chair Café, and the Southern Skillet in town more than once. Most of the folks there were locals and all seem to know each other. Great family atmosphere, and a big thanks to our host Jim and his very accommodating and helpful crew.
