Farm camping in the Blackdown Hills, with campfires, big views and homegrown produce for sale

No one likes to stereotype but, as farm campsite’s go, they don’t get much more farmy than Higher Moorlands. On a hilltop at the head of the Otter Valley, this pop-up campsite, around for the summer months only, has all the staples. Sheep and cattle dot the fields, there are pigs too, and you can buy the farm’s own free-range eggs from the honest shop, where there’s also seasonal vegetables for sale. Campfires are, of course, allowed and there’s acres of grassy space where children can duck and dive and play games of hide and seek. It’s a pastoral scene. And it all enjoys the backdrop of the Blackdown Hills, with far-reaching views over Hartridge Common.

Despite all the space, there’s a relatively small number of pitches here all told, ensuring there’s not too much pressure on the environment. In an effort to establish a wildflower meadow, the grass is left long until late summer. For those on the hunt for a few more comforts, there's also a pre-pitched yurt you can book, with a king-sized bed, soft furnishings and basic kitchen equipment.

Facilities are befitting of a farm. There are a couple of well-kept composting loos, two hot showers, washing up stations and a freezer in the shed with the shop. Otherwise, the real offering here is space and freedom. Buy meat fresh from the farm to cook over the campfire one evening, or rise early to enjoy the south-easterly views and watch the sunrise over the valley. There are local walks detailed on a big, annotated map pinned to the wall in the shed. By car, meanwhile, it’s a half-hour drive to Sidmouth, Seaton, Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast.

A great campsite - basic but with everything I needed. Lovely views and easy access to everything East Devon has to offer!

When we arrived there, what we saw and description in site .was different . Grass was not mowed, struggle to put tent, we pay extra for fire pit...as no one was arround ( as we checked), we thought ok, let's finish with tent and all and see after. We saw a lady at one point but we had no idea if she was from there or just going to toilette...anyway...after 1 hour we left. From all the camping places we have been, this was the lowest .

Good camping
Nice large field with pitching around the perimeter although we were lucky enough to almost have it to ourselves. Friendly hosts with a good ethos. Facilities were good, the compost loos worked well being long drop and the showers were well designed with ample hot water with good pressure. The little honesty shop worked well with logs, cider and meat products fresh from the farm. ill definitely return if we are in the area again.

Excellent with room to improve
This is a 4/5 star review. Owners were lovely and welcoming. We were lucky enough to have the field to our own for most of the time but unlucky enough to have 50mph winds and rain one day. The toilets and showers were spotless and the little farm shop had some excellent meat for tasty BBQs. Cows and sheep were excellent entertainment for the little one. Little improvements / things to be aware of: - airfield close by which is active with small historic planes during reasonable hours. - driveway needs some love. It’s bumpy but ok if taken very very slowly. Don’t attempt it in a low sports car. - the grass to pitch on was very long. Would have been great if it was mowed. It was very wet most of the time (rain / dew). We got plenty of bites from bugs (our toddler got loads of bites and a week later we were in A&E with testing for Lymes disease (fingers crossed it’s negative) So the moral is bring your spray and creams / have the grass cut right down. More prevention needed from us! - would love hot water to the sink for washing greasy dishes. - would love owners to find a way to have general waste collection Seems like a long list of negatives but this was what took it from 5 to a 4 star ;-) Overall an excellent time was had. Thank you.

Higher Moorlands Farm is a beautiful and peaceful place. We are in the Blackdown Hills in East Devon, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Luppitt, just a 25 minute drive from the Jurassic coastline. The area is rich in wildlife and heritage, a beautiful landscape with hedgerows and copses, small farms with intricate field patterns, deep valleys and narrow, winding lanes. The farm consists of 30 acres of mixture of permanent pasture and wet woodland, with areas that are totally untouched and full of wildlife. We are part of the Mid-tier Stewardship programme; conservation and working in harmony with nature underpins everything that we do here. You might see us working around the farm, we have been busy planting new hedges for increased biodiversity, creating banks and breaking down our fields into smaller pastures. Parts of the farm are being left to rewild. We use livestock to manage our pastures and during the summer you might see the sheep or cattle roaming the fields. We also have free range pigs and a small organic market garden which you're most welcome to have a look around. We run a small, relaxed campsite during the summer in on of our meadows. From our camping field you get far reaching views overlooking the beautiful Hartridge Common where you can catch amazing moon rises in the evening and stunning sunrises in the morning. Everything feels very spacious and expansive, we keep our pitch numbers low. You can bring your own firepit or rent one from us as an extra when you book or from the shop on arrival. If you intend to cook over the firepit you will need to bring your own grill and utensils. Please be aware we dont allow fires or bbq's on the ground. You're welcome to unload your car by your pitch, we ask that you then park it in the carpark, leaving the field free of cars. Camper vans can, of course, stay in the field! Farm produce can be bought from an onsite shop, including a selection of meats, seasonal vegetables and firewood and kindling for your campfires. In the shop area you can also use the freezer for re-freezing ice-packs and there is a phone charging point and a big wall map detailing local attractions and recommended walks. We are an inclusive space and offer our warmest welcome to people of all gender identities, nationality, skin colour, sexual preference and religion. We recognise that the countryside can feel like a hostile place for some people, and we want you to feel safe and at ease here if this applies to you. If there is anything we can do to help you with this please let us know and come and find us and talk to us if you want some reccomendations on things to do and places to go. We are a friendly bunch! Our 'what3words' location for the entrance to the farm is: continues.fellow.wink The farm postcode takes you to our neighbours farm, they are getting a bit fed up with lost campers turning up so please do make sure you're in the right place! Our farm name is on a sign at the top of the drive.
Nearby attractions

If you’re interested in history, there are seven iron age hill forts in the surrounding Blackdown Hills, the nearest being Hembury Hill Fort, 10 minutes away. Dumpdon Hill Fort is also around 10 minutes and Castle Neroche is a 20-minute drive. Wildwood Escot Park (20 minutes) has plenty on offer for families and animal lovers, whether that’s honeybees, wolves or otters. The River Otter starts not too far from the site, around half an hours drive away, does, indeed, play host to a number of otters but has also become better known in recent years as the home for a number of beavers that are repopulating this part of England for the first time in centuries. For those that need a little more adrenaline, Dunkeswell Airfield offers sky diving, or there is the Mansell Raceway go-cart circuit, both are less than a 10-minute drive away.

Food and drink

The nearest good pub is The Drewe Arms in Broadhembury (01404 841267), 10 minutes' drive from the farm with a big beer garden, good food and a great selection of beers, wines and gins. The Vine Inn in Honiton (0140442889; 15 minutes away) is also a good shout, famous for their traditional cream teas at lunchtime alongside a simple but effective menu. For your shopping needs, Honiton is also a good pick. It has a fantastic wet fish shop, an independent wine shop and three big supermarkets. Don't miss Otter Valley Dairy (15 minutes), where you can sit and eat your homemade ice cream whilst watching the cows that produced the milk (they also do great wood-fired pizzas).
