On the Tongue River, tiny Ashland is the gateway to the Custer Gallatin National Forest and the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and the Crow Indian Reservation. While some of the closest camping areas to Ashland are within the national forest, you'll also find options in the Tongue River Reservoir State Park to the south and in and around Crow Agency and Garryowen to the east, including campgrounds and private lodgings run by members of area tribes—ideal if you’re interested in learning about the history and cultural traditions of the lands that you’re visiting. Whether you plan to bring a tent or an RV or prefer to book a cabin or a glamping tipi, you’ll find plenty of options in the area, with more options still a bit further south in the neighboring state of Wyoming.
