Glenn Farm

6 sites · RVs, Tents125 acres · Fort White, FL
The farm you’re camping on is one of the last family farms remaining in Columbia County and is named Glenn Farm after DV Glenn who married Hettie Lou Niblack in the 1930’s. Over the last 150 years it has been farmed by some of the county’s oldest families such as the Niblack and Ellis families. When DV Glenn came to Florida from his farm in Cairo, GA he took over the portion of the Niblack farm that was inherited by his wife Hettie Lou. At that time he was running native Florida cattle on over 6000 acres. Unfortunately, In 1951 he was killed in a hunting accident leaving his wife with the farm and 4 children (ages 4-11). In order to survive, Hettie Lou Niblack Glenn was forced to sell 5000 acres at $25 an acre. Holding a bachelors degree from Florida State College for Women, she was able to secure a job at the University of Florida as a secretary and with the money from the land sale she was able to raise her four children. Of the original farm, 600 acres remain intact and the Glenn family is trying to keep the farm as an agricultural operation. Your campsite is 1 of three spots (Arrowhead Sink, Dunagan’s Meadow or Magnolia Sink). Dunagan’s meadow is a pasture behind the old farmhouse (built in 1844), Magnolia sink is also on the main farm while Arrowhead Sink is on the edge of a hayfield about a mile down a dirt road. Glenn Farm is a place to come relax and experience a world that is rapidly disappearing. It is not a commercial campground.

The Bird Ranch

4 sites · Tents4 acres · O'brien, FL
The Bird Ranch is 4 acres of peaceful nature. We have 3 pioneer sites (2 with fire pits), one RV hook-up (power and water), and a cabin to choose from. We never really know what wildlife is wondering around or when they might pop up. Rest assure though; there are always birds singing, crickets chirping, frogs croaking, owls hooting, and we can even hear the neighboring pigs, chickens, cows, goats and dogs carry on. I will take all that over city noise any day of the week! The property has trails, an open field for games, and plenty of day outings to do. There are 2 natural springs (Royal and Little River) off the Suwannee River that are within a 10-minute drive. Branford Springs and Troy Springs are within 20 minutes. You can float down the Ichetucknee River on an innertube, catch a local rodeo just down Hwy 129 or take a 3 hour round trip bike ride. Cedar Key is a quiet little town with cute shops and restaurants. They roll up the streets after sunset; but what a beautiful sunset! There are also a few horseback riding ranches within 20 minutes from the property and if you're really adventurous and want to ride a camel; Lonesome Chicken Camel Ranch is less than an hour away.

Camping near Live Oak guide

Overview

Live Oak is a peaceful North Florida town bound by the spring-fed Suwannee and Santa Fe rivers. True to its name, Live Oak is full of old growth oak trees hung with Spanish moss that flows in the breeze. The town is also famous for its music festivals and cave diving, plus its family-friendly springs, kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking. Set where I-10 meets I-75, Live Oak is in the center of the triangle formed by Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Gainesville. The town makes a great camping getaway from any of these cities or a rewarding layover on a road trip through the South.

Where to go

Live Oak Surrounds

Many of Live Oak’s music festivals occur at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park & Campground north of town. If traveling by RV, Live Oak has a good variety of RV parks with picnic tables, hot showers, and full hookups. Additional camping options can be found close by in Lake City.

Live Oak’s Spring Parks

With almost 33,000 feet of underwater cave systems, the Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park in Live Oak is one of the largest cave diving sites in the US. While scuba diving here is for experts only, anyone can swim and snorkel in the park’s crystal-clear pools or hit the easy, 1.2-mile nature trail. For more local spring action, you can also explore a first-magnitude spring at Lafayette Blue Springs State Park.

Suwannee River State Park

To camp out among the oaks, head to Suwannee River State Park, about 20 minutes from downtown Live Oak. The park’s tent camping and RV camping sites feature picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms. You can launch a boat or kayak on the Suwannee and Withlacoochee rivers, or explore the mountain biking and hiking trails.

Additional Nearby Springs

Even more springs can be found southeast of Live Oak. The six-mile Ichetucknee River at Ichetucknee Springs State Park is considered one of the most beautiful spring runs in the state. Canoe and kayak rentals are available on-site, and a shuttle service allows boaters and tubers to complete the run. Ginnie Springs and Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park are also in the area, just a bit further down the Santa Fe River.

When to go

Live Oak’s subtropical environment makes it a year-round camping destination, although summers run hot and humid. The cooler winter months are a great time for Live Oak camping, when you can spot migratory birds. Campsites in Live Oak book out long in advance on festival weekends, so it’s worth checking a local events calendar to gauge how busy it will be.
