Blacknot Farm

6 sites ¡ RVs, Tents40 acres ¡ Saint Andrews, MB
We have been recycling this farm for years. It was owned previously by a couple who worked for a nursery and they planted many varieties of trees. Later it was part of a Manitoba pilot project for hi-bred poplar so there is a 14 acre poplar forest that was planted on a grid. It is a very unique place. We love it here and hope you do too! Learn more about this land: Enjoy over 40 beautiful acres within the heart of the prairies at Blacknot Farm! Perfect for pitching a tent or parking your RV, camper van, or trailer. A wonderful family-friendly (including pets!) getaway only 20 minutes north of Winnepeg, and 10 minutes from Selkirk, Manitoba. There is outdoor access to restrooms, water, and electricity on the property. With 5 sites to choose from, you can select a very quiet and peaceful spot in the trees or field or choose to be closer to the house and barn with wifi signal, running water and flush toilets. While you’re here, you can go on nature walks, raid the garden, play yard games, enjoy a bonfire, and explore the woods. If interested, ask for a tour of the 3 season party hayloft with antiques, vintage video games, an old pool table, and a zip line. The campsite has firewood for campfires, a picnic table to enjoy your meals, and potable water is available through a tap (both hot and cold water). All sites can be accessed by a traditional car, no off-roading or 4-wheel drive vehicle is needed.  If you’re interested in exploring the area,  Selkirk, Manitoba has plenty of fishing and a marine museum.  We are also a short drive to Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Management Area is a 17-minute drive. One of North America’s birding hotspots and a great destination for people of all ages! This 36km2 Wildlife Management Area features a restored prairie marsh, aspen-oak bluff, waterfowl lure crops, artesian springs, some of Manitoba’s last remaining patches of tall-grass prairie and 30 kilometres of trails for you to explore. Gimli or New Iceland is about a 30-minute drive north and is a great summer or winter destination. Rich in history, art, culture and outdoor discovery it has many restaurants, lovely beaches and the New Iceland Heritage Museum. In the spirit of truth and reconciliation we acknowledge that Blacknot Farm is in the heart of Treaty One territory the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Cree, and Dakota peoples and the Homelands of the Metis Nation. We respect the treaties made on this land and acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past and present. We stand committed to building positive relationships rooted in a spirit of genuine reconciliation as we move forward. I look forward to hosting you!

Forest & Herb Farm by the Beach

1 site ¡ Lodging80 acres ¡ Scanterbury, MB
A stone’s throw from the beaches of southeastern Lake Winnipeg, Cityfolk Farm is home to 80 acres of wide open fields, a medicinal herb farm, and forests of poplar, pine, alder, and willow for you to explore. THINGS TO DO... Say hello to the chickens roaming the land, enjoy a relaxing walk through our forest labyrinth, tour the medicinal herb farm (@awakenherbs), meet our Great Pyrenees, Willow the gentle giant, swim at a beach with some of the finest sands in the world (a 15 minutes' drive away), and relax in a hammock, gently swayed by the breeze. THE CAMPER... Stepping into this vintage RV is like stepping back in time to the 1970s. The camper sleeps 4-6 (2 adults and 4 kids is workable), with a master bed area, a convertible kitchen booth, and a bunk above the driver's area. Equipped with bedding, towels, cloth napkins, board games, and more, we have tried to anticipate your needs. The kitchen is stocked with some basic ingredients such as spices, s&p, oats, tea herbs, oils, and honey and in the cupboards you'll find dishes and utensils. The stove in the RV is not in use, so you can enjoy the BBQ just outside the door, or use the communal campground kitchen. There is a composting toilet in the camper bathroom, and you'll also have access to the campground composting toilet outhouse and outdoor shower. There is no running water in the camper - there is a water dispenser in both the kitchen and bathroom for drinking and hand-washing. WHERE WE ARE... A stone’s throw from the beaches on the southeastern shores of Lake Winnipeg, 45 minutes north of Winnipeg, just 10 minutes to Gull Lake, 15 to Patricia Beach & the Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive Trail, and 20 minutes to Grand Beach, which features sands ranked in the top 10 worldwide. WHO WE ARE... Our family of six moved to the country from Winnipeg (hence the name Cityfolk Farm). We learn and work from home, run a re-skilling festival (@takerootfest), and a medicinal herb farm (@awakenherbs). Fostering a connection with nature and cultivating community is at the heart of all we do. WHOSE LAND... The land now stewarded by our family (Cityfolk Farm) is part of Treaty 1 territory and the ancestral land of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Metis Nation. We acknowledge that we are on stolen land, and we continue to learn about both the harm that was done and the beautiful history and traditions of tending land & people of the Indigenous nations who suffered and continue to be negatively impacted by colonialism. We are working to be conscious of and active in reconciliation and welcome relationship and collaboration with Indigenous communities. We encourage all who are connected to the farm, festival, farm stays and other events here to dig into this learning as well, and come to the land in thoughtfulness and gratitude.

Camping near Selkirk guide

Overview

Set on a big bend of the Red River, this small town is defined by water, with the province’s two big lakes (Winnipeg and Manitoba) close by. Although famous for the massive catfish that anglers haul in from the banks of the river, there’s more to Selkirk than fish. Climb aboard 19th-century vessels and get hands-on lake life experience at the Marine Museum of Manitoba, or spend time strolling through Selkirk Park—from here in the heart of town, you can also launch a boat, canoe or kayak. Then head to shores beyond—Lake Winnipeg is just a few minutes out of town.

Where to go

Grand Beach Provincial Park

Living up to its name, Grand Beach features white sands that curve in a big crescent for three kilometres and are backed by eight-metre sand dunes. Spot pelicans and even bald eagles swooping over the waves while you build a sandcastle, take a swim, or sunbathe.

Winnipeg Beach Provincial Park

You’ll probably drive, but trains once brought Winnipeggers from the heat of the city to this breezy beach destination. Take a walk down the boardwalk, play volleyball or tennis, and then hop in Lake Winnipeg, a favourite spot for windsurfers, boaters, and kayakers.

Bird’s Hill Provincial Park

Popular Bird’s Hill gets busy, welcoming some 1 million visitors every year (many from nearby Winnipeg). But there’s plenty of room to spread out, with the park rambling over 35 square kilometres, half of it in the backcountry. Ride a horse from the stables, take a walk through the aspen forest, enjoy a picnic, or come for a special event—polo tournaments and one of North America’s largest folk festivals are hosted here.

St. Ambroise Provincial Park

This is a favourite park for birdwatchers who come to its wetlands to spot migratory pelicans, warblers, and geese. In summer, it’s all about the beach, where families soak up the shallow, gentle waters on Lake Manitoba and wade out to sand bars.

When to go

If you’re looking to fish or partake in water activities, summer is the time to come. The water’s warm by July, and nice weather can stretch well into September (when the leaves fade from green to gold). This is also the busiest tourist season, a prime time for festivals and the free Waterfront Concert Series. Winters are definitely cold but a perfect time for those who love to ski, snowshoe, or ice-fish.

Know before you go

  • From here, you can wing your way to more remote parts of the province on a float plane—the Selkirk Water Aerodrome is just outside of town.
  • Set between Winnipeg and the province’s most popular beaches, Selkirk can see heavy traffic, especially on Fridays and Sundays in the summer months.
  • A number of local fishing outfitters take visitors out on the water—just keep in mind that you’ll likely need a license.
