Where to go
Orange Heritage Trail
Discover the town’s beautifully restored historic houses, buildings and key sites on The Orange Heritage Trail. The 90-minute walk starts from the Orange Visitor Information Centre with interpretive signs along the route.
Lake Canobolas Reserve
Previously known as Meadow Creek Reservoir, Lake Canobolas was built in 1918 to supply water to Orange. It’s a lovely place to go walking, cycling, swimming, fishing or canoeing. There’s also a playground on the eastern bank for kids, picnic areas, barbecues and a waterfront café.
Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area
Pack a picnic lunch and go hiking or birdwatching in this scenic park, formed by a dormant volcano. Treks include a walk to Federal Falls waterfall, the Orange View Lookout or the Snowgum Walking Track.
Pinnacle Reserve and Lookout
At sunrise or sunset, the view from the top of Towac Pinnacle over the valley below is one to remember. The reserve also has picnic shelters and barbecues.
When to go
Orange’s cool climate means it’s not too hot in summer, with temperatures peaking at around 21°C in January. In winter it can be a little chilly, averaging around 5°C in July. The vibrant autumn colours make March and April a lovely time to visit. The Orange F.O.O.D Week festival also runs over ten days in April, making it a fun time to go.
Know before you go
- Orange is about 3.5 hours’ drive west of Sydney.
- The town gets very busy on weekends and public holidays, so it’s best to book campsites as far as you can in advance.
- Orange has several supermarkets to stock up on supplies, including Coles and Woolworths.
- BCF Orange is the best place to buy camping gear and outdoor equipment. Elsewhere in town are Kathmandu and Intersport outdoor stores.
