Heartland exists where the wilderness of off-grid life meets an artistic collective that sings possibility to the fringe dwellers of the Regenerative Eco-Village movement. Heartland offers people a break from the craziness of what so many call "life" and a view of what can be co-created with each other for each other. As in permaculture, the Heartland model is about doing more with less, it's about allowing our individual and diverse natural Flow states to merge forging new pathways of co-creation that are the true answer to our collective purpose.
Tent #1 is on a perfectly flat 16'x20' cedar deck. It's the only tent that is relatively close to another tent, so it's a great choice when you want to be close to your neighbors. This spot is relatively central and you are a 2-4 minute walk from all amenities.
On-Site Bonus Attractions:
Want a mind altering add-on experience? We have a sensory exultation tank which offers a relaxation and/or meditation experience not found anywhere else in this world. Step in to a 4 foot by 8 foot dark tank. Soon after you lay down you'll become very aware of a full body vibrational experience, layered with a Bio-Mat offering Far Infrared Rays designed to improve circulation and speed up the healing of soft tissue. If that was not enough, we have you wearing a Woojer Vest offering full chest vibration synced with the audio program of your choice. If that was not enough, we offer you an added Kasina experience, this Pali term refers to an ancient system of meditation that uses visual objects to focus the mind. This visual add-on induces yet more positive mood shifting effects.
Check out our experiences and/or ask about other potential add-ons because we likely have things going on that you'd be interested to join.
With a 15 minute drive away there is also a really beautiful clear water swimming hole with a tire swing open all year. Another very highly recommended day trip is the famous Yuba river, which is roughly an hour away.
The nearest and best store is 30 minutes away so plan accordingly (Holiday Market, Auburn).
The Seasonal Fluctuations:
We have seasons at Heartland, and due to the high peak heat of August and the coldest winter month of February we hibernate and close the retreat.
*Spring* - March-May
The shire is alive! It's fresh, green, and the lake is (usually) 100% full and less than 5 minute walk. Can't beat this experience and it's something you'll always desire coming back to after it has been experienced once. Nights are often cold, so bring extra layers!
*Summer* - June-July
The northern California Oak Savanna with these expansive views and golden grass canvas brings a deep sense of peace to everyone. The lake is (usually) 50-75% full (5-7 min walk) and during the hottest times of the day there is nothing more soothing than a 1 or 4 ;) hour relaxing float in the lake. BYO floatie ;)
*Fall Notice* - Sep-November
It's gorgeous here, but please know that our lake is a reservoir and it is low between Sep-November. Swimming is still possible but the walk to swimmable water is longer. During this time the bottom of the lake offers remarkable river hikes.

Places to see near Heartland Collective
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
My sister, nephew and I had a great time. He is only six so we wanted to ease him into camping. He loved the tent and exploring everything at Heartland. I liked the hammock and the views. We had a very relaxing stay and will definitely come back again!
Great glamping getaway!
We loved staying here! The tents are beautiful and comfortable and a lot of thought and love has gone into this campground. The lake is accessible for swimming, Shama is a wonderful host. We will definitely come back for a local getaway.
Great escape for families!
Great stay! Very accommodating-especially for small kids. We had 3 kids total ages 4-6 and they had a blast playing with the chickens, climbing all the structures and exploring. We felt very safe and welcomed.
We had tent #1 and #2 and it was perfect for two families. Only a short walk to the refreshing water/lake.
Planning to come back very soon.
We were lucky to be able to stay at this hidden gem. We find it clean, peaceful & very relaxing. The view & the sunsets are amazing. Huge property to explore, and we love how the chickens are roaming around and keeping us company especially during brunch. I highly recommend this place!
Laid back and exceptional sunsets
Fantastic place! We rented yurt #1 which was closest to the kitchen and bathroom/showers. If you want a little more seclusion go for the yurts on the hill/under the big willow. It was fun walking around the property, holding chickens, petting the neighbor horses and seeing all the cows prancing around. When we went we couldn't use our own kayak but they do have some to rent. We rented the kayaks, ($20 for the whole day) and took a trip to different parts around the lake. The lake was not very full but after a few more rainstorms in March/April I'm sure it would be perfect. They have all the cooking things needed (pots/pans/stove/cutting board etc. and even warm water to wash the dishes in the evening and morning!) I'd recommend bringing a sponge, dishtowel, and a headlamp/lantern for the nighttime because there is no light in the kitchen area. Don't just use google maps. Take time to read the directions they give. We made that mistake and ended up at the wrong location. We rented a heater for the yurt but I'm sure it would be warm enough without. Cool people work on that farm and it's very laid back. We went mid-week March and there were no other renters.
A magical place
Heartland is such a beautiful place with wonderful people who care for the land! Because of our experience, this place will forever hold a special place in my heart. My boyfriend and I arrived at night and Anders greeted us and kindly directed us to our tent. We were pleasantly surprised with the whole set up! The tent looks like a mini space station which gave us major Mars vibes. The tent is very spacious for two people. The twinkling lights above the tent and bed made it all the more magical. The next day we met Shaman, who is a wonderful person who’s chickens followed behind her and were so friendly! The chickens roam all over the land. They are so friendly that one even jumped on my lap! In the afternoon my boyfriend and I walked around the lake, and to my surprise he proposed to me right there! <3 It was such a beautiful weekend. A place I will cherish in my memories forever. I hope to come back as frequently as I can, and perhaps bring some friends along next time :)
Will try again after drought...
This site really is overall pretty great... my only issue is the effects of the drought on the area, which I know can not be helped by the owners. I was really looking forward to being by the lake and that is the main reason I chose this site. However, even though I was in contact with the owners all through the week about the air quality to make sure it would healthy enough to come up... they never mentioned that with the drought, the whole thing had basically dried up. It used to be a huge reservoir and hopefully with the rain, will be again someday. At that point I can’t wait to go back! The amenities were great and the tents provided were clean and comfy. We were greeted by the owner and staff and were treated really well. We booked two nights but only stayed for one, as we were in search of water. Like I said... GREAT PLACE! Just would have liked to be properly notified of the lack of water access through our communication. Would have rescheduled for another time had we known.
Heartland was exactly what we needed. We were there for the full moon and the star gazing was sweet. Plenty of grounds for our daughter to explore but there is also some solar panels that are tempting to climb so keep an eye out. The kitchen was stocked with everything necessary and there are picnic tables right next to it with sweet lights to eat under or you can make set your own camping stuff up next to your yurt if you’d like more distance.
The showers were perfect and soooo refreshing. The compostable toilets were rustic. One of our visits had a praying mantis joining us which was a highlight for that potty run.
There are chickens that roam free during the day and Edwardo who helps take care of the grounds has a very sweet dog named Nylo.
Shama and Anders are still developing their grounds and i can see how different it would be throughout the year. September is crazy hot but the lake is there to hang out in if you are prepared with water shoes that will stay on your feet through the mud. Our daughter loved it.
We took a day trip to nevada city and jumped in the yuba at edwards crossing. So refreshing.
READ THE DIRECTIONS PROVIDED BY HEARTLAND. We were running late and followed Waze and it took us in the wrong direction. The last few miles of the road is unpaved so we cruised in at 10mph for about 30 minutes.
We will return during a different season to see whats new with Heartland.
Not my style, but overall nice!
The site was clean and well kept. The toilets and showers were really nice, as well as the kitchen and the tent. This is a personal preference, but I wish things were not as spread out, and it was kind of a far walk to the lake especially when it's 97 degrees out. This might be a nicer stay in the fall or early summer, but early August was super hot and not much could be done about it. It would also be nice to have a freezer or ice machine on-site.
