We are so excited to host you! This area has the unique designation of a community with privately owned property in the middle of the Anza Borrego State Park.  Primarily due to rugged outdoor loving folks in the 1930's that would make the 6 hour journey by car from San Diego to spend time among the jackrabbits, kit foxes and burros!

About the property

Our property is not a commercial campground. You will be "glamping" at our home. The five acre parcels are "Jack Rabbit Homesteads"  granted in 1938 that ensure privacy and back up to Cleveland National Forest. George Leetch of Canebrake said it best...the people who come here "find the peace and beauty of the desert vastness a healing seclusion and comforting relief from the frenzied outside world”. We work to cultivate an atmosphere of united fellowship and good-neighborliness prevails, but a respect for privacy is held in high regard.

We are on the floor of the AB desert surrounded by hiking and four wheel driving trails. The closest town is Julian to the north 45 minutes away and Ocotillo to the South 25 minutes away You can find hot springs 5 minutes away and the stars at night are endless. There are several small stores 10 to 15 minutes away to buy ice and sundries should you need them.

For those looking for outdoor adventures there are four hikes of varying levels directly from our site. There are hot springs 5 minutes away as well as four-wheel drive roads. If you want snow, Julian is 45 minutes away up the mountain and offers good opportunities for snow play. Off-road biking is available in Ocotillo which is 25 minutes away to the South. Road biking is super fun from our site as there is so little traffic where we are!

We live onsite and like to greet Hipcampers at arrival and then leave them to enjoy themselves. We do offer different extra experiences as well if you want to hike, learn to bubble, or learn to prepare raw food. Make sure you take a look at our ‘extras’ during booking if you would like to do one of these.

About the listing

This listing is our tent or platform style listing.

Pitch your tent or sleep outside on the platform at The Willows...OK the willows are "snags." But, out on the desert floor you will be with a walk to the new Willows Wash-room on a lined pathway.  Enjoy the great outdoors knowing it's a 1 minute walk to toilet and shower.  I like to wrap myself in a tarp, sleep on the platform and call myself a burrito.

The site has a cooking station and sink with water supplied through a hose. There is a cooler to use to store your dry goods. We have big brown umbrella for you to use and a private firepit.

-Private shower and toilet for each listing

What a slice of desert heaven! The space itself looks out onto a valley, meandering walks thru ocotillo forests and boulder washes are right at your hearth, and Ellyn is a fount of knowledge. Her energy is so warm and kind! Bring a sleeping pad and bag and sleep under the incredible light show of night sky. Ellyn has a huge umbrella to sit under and read during the warmer daylight hours and there is plenty of cool water to fill your pack before a brisk morning hike. Overall, a gem in the desert!

My husband, our pup, and I stayed at Ellyn's Willow campsite this past weekend, and I must say, it was nothing short of a magical experience. Ellyn's warm and friendly accomodating nature really made us feel comfortable, and all the positive reviews about her are completely true. This campsite and trip reminded me how important deserts need to be in rotation in our list of destinations as star gazing was unparalleled. We also fell asleep (and at times woke up to) distant echos of coyotes singing hauntingly beautiful music. Lastly, Ellyn's enthusiasm to teach bubbleology was infectious and completely mind-blowing. We took away so much knowing how to use different wands and read the wind, but more than anything, we got to travel to our childhood during crazy unprecedented times. We hope to return with our son, Julian, one day, who was coincidentally named a week before the trip. Ellyn, if you see this, please say hello to John and Nimue from all three of us!

Ellyn was such a welcoming host, and we felt immediately welcomed and cared for. The spot comes with an awesome sink and clean outhouse with awesome shower. Ellyn was kind, helpful, and gave good directions.

Some things to know: you can't pull your car up directly to the spot, but there is a cart provided to help take your stuff the 100 ish feet to the campsite. Also there are a lot of cactuses! Totally avoidable for walking/camping, but the ground does have stickers everywhere, bring good shoes and a pair of tweezers.

All in all we had a wonderful time and would absolutely recommend to a friend.

Great camping spot by Ellyn's charming desert property (but far enough from it), perfect for chilling and enjoying the (very dark) night sky. The wooden platform is perfect as a work surface if you have lots of cooking utensils. The adjacent sink with running water was invaluable for washing dishes etc. Ellyn is working on a bathroom structure by the campsite, which wasn't quite ready when we were there, so we used her full-blown bathroom (sink+shower+toiler) in a small separate structure by her house, which I think was reserved to us campers. COVID protocols were in place. Borrego Springs is a 1-hour drive.

Ellyn's place is an ideal getaway for some high quality desert camp R&R. You've got a site that looks out on miles of cholla fields and the rolling arid hills. It served us perfectly in our quest for a desert cookout and serious kickback location. The site itself is tucked away into some willow brush and is equipped with useful basics including a shade umbrella, a hose powered sink station and the wooden platform.

Canebrake canyon is a funky little dirt road enclave situated in the heart of the desert. The closest stores are many miles away, so make sure you arrive stocked up on supplies. This isolation is exactly what makes it such an excellent campsite, just come prepared.

Ellyn herself is a fairly optimal host. She's interesting, amicable and professional, providing a good balance of attentiveness while respecting our space and privacy.

We absolutely loved this expansive and welcoming nature getaway! The owners of the property are so hospitable and kind; we felt unofficially adopted by our "desert godparents." Our trip was a pretty quick turnaround so we didn't even get to explore most of the surrounding area, but we loved exploring the rocky hills just West of the property! Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick escape from the city. If you are planning to sleep on the sleeping platform, bring a good sleeping mat/under-cushion and a well-rated sleeping bag with a hood!

Ellyn and John are so gracious, welcoming, and hospitable. Excellent resources. Beautiful property with great hikes steps off the property boundary — ask Ellyn for suggestions and she will point you in the right direction. Super close to great hikes in Anza Borrego too! Perfect spot for tent campers with access to a hot shower, toilet, and food prep sink. A fire ring, bring your own fire safe grill and you can cook outside on an open fire. 10/10 would recommend and I can’t wait to visit again.

This spot was pure magic! The perfect off grid no cell service getaway. Ellyn was incredibly responsive and sent some really helpful information before our arrival including directions, a weather report, and even a packing list! As a fellow list lover this really got me going.

Once we arrived Ellyn was there to help guide us to our spot and get situated. She recommended we wake up for the sunrise and man were we glad we did! She also recommended a little walkabout path that we checked out during the day.

We had some pretty hectic winds to contend with that late afternoon/evening, but in no way does that deter us from coming back! Thank you Ellyn for an awesome desert weekend-we hope to see you again soon!

Had a great stay at Ellyn’s. I stayed at the Tent/Burrito site and it was nice to have amenities (normal toilet, shower, access to electrical for charging things if needed, water and sink, fire ring) while still having some privacy and an open view out to the beautiful desert. Ellyn was friendly and made me feel welcome. I did a short hike easily accessible from my tent site and had some super serene moments among the cactus and ocotillo, and lots of hummingbirds out in the area too which was a nice treat. Great place for some peaceful desert time or as a stop-over or jumping point to exploring Anza-Borrego or nearby Julian.
