DRARS.org -  Downer Ranch is now part of the CedarZen Project. Perfectly situated within a 30-minute drive to Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park Entrance!

Welcome to Downer Ranch Agricultural Tourism site. We offer a wide variety of agricultural experiences. We now offer horse boarding onsite! Due to COVID-19, we will not be offering horseback riding until the 2021 season. All required facilities are now available onsite, including non-permanent compost toilet tents (while permanent facilities are being built presently), Enclosed Outdoor CedarZen Shower, Outdoor eating area with seating with solar lights and a BBQ that offers both Charcoal and Gas grilling options :)

UPDATE - Communal fire pits are the only allowable space for open flame as we are in high fire danger season. NO FIRES AT YOUR CAMPSITE! Violation of this policy will void your stay with no refunds and immediate removal from the property. There may be a few sites cleared with an acceptation to this rule based on fist responder / military trained spec ops. If you see a site with a campfire, it should already be to our knowledge. You may ask them how they got a fire cleared for their campsite, and they should respond accordingly. If they do not, please inform the host as we will remove them from the property for all our protection.

We currently have 9 horses that are free to roam the property. They love any candy that is peppermint or sugar cubes and the likes. FYI- That is how you win them over :) They probably won't leave your side after!  Fruit/veggies are their last choice. Think of them like children. What would your kids prefer? But yes, they need healthy snacks too!

Downer Ranch is situated on 72-acre 100-year former cattle ranch and gold mine that is fully fenced with 3 cattle corrals. We are an animal rescue and sanctuary that also operates a campground, equestrian and hiking trails throughout our entire 72 acres along with another landlocked 140 BLM acres accessible at the top of the mountain.

Currently 8 horses live onsite are completely free to roam, so please be mindful when sharing their home and please remember to secure the gate when you enter and leave the property, they are escape artists!

This amazing and beautiful property has a neat history as well, including a 100+ year cattle ranch, logging and even a gold mine dating back to 1902! Many of the mining/logging/ranching roads have recently been graded. The property is mostly rolling hills with a neat steep hiking trail to the top of the mountain which brings you to the top of the property that joins the 140 acres of BLM land.

WINTERTIME RECOMMENDATION - It is highly advised to have a 4x4 or AWD vehicle. Once the heavy rains start, the roads can be very slick and muddy.  Winter conditions are usually December to February. Please message the host if you have questions as to road conditions during your stay.

Downer ranch allowed us a good nights sleep and the most joyful wake up with an adorable dog and lots of chickens.

The campsite had lots of open space and had a really nice outdoor shower. The location was great for exploring Kings Canyon National Park during the day.

There’s wasps, we got stung. There are horse stools everywhere. Ports potty bathroom and outside shower. For $85 it is definitely not worth. Place was also not easy to find. However since the price is high, there are many open spaces, book if there’s no vacancy anywhere else. Also closest market is 20minute away, so make sure you pack up. I get that I’m being extra picky, but for the price common.

We loved our stay and wish we had more time! We rolled in just after the sunset and chose to find a spot on the back part of the property - well just our luck, we picked the spot that the horses like to chill in! It was really cool to wake up to all 8 horses kickin’ it outside our tent, with wild turkeys tooling around nearby. The land was beautiful, the location easy to find, and we’d love to come back.

Beautiful to wake up to! They really only cared when they thought I had treats, lol

This place did not fulfill our expectations at all. Although there were compost toilets provided, they were quite dirty. The sink advertised for washing dishes was not working and we could not find the promised drinking water. Overall, the place was trashy and dirty. We will not be coming back nor will we be recommending this place to any friends. We could have easily gotten a much nicer motel room for the same price.

I had such a wonderful time at Matt’s animal sanctuary! He is a wonderful person who was a joy to talk and hang out with. His horses and other animals are just as wonderful! I just to spend some quality time with all the horses, sheep, chickens, kittens and pup! Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves camping and loves animals.

This place was great if you are looking for a spot close to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. You can get close to the animals on the property which are all great to be around. The port-o-potty's weren't clean at all which was the one reservation I had when staying here. However, the shower on site was very clean and was a nice perk.
