Blue Sky Center is an innovative rural community design and development non-profit organization located just outside the small high-desert townsite of New Cuyama, CA.

Please take a moment to read through the description of our Shelter Circle so that you can choose which Hut best fits your needs. Also, it's important to note that, at this time, we cannot host walk-in guests. It is necessary to make a reservation or at the very least contact us to make arrangements for your stay. We'd love to have you but need to know you're coming!

Our five canvas-topped, Shelton-designed huts offer our most inclusive camping experience. Furnished with beds, furniture, linens, lighting, and electrical outlets, you're sure to be comfortable in your one of a kind hut. Circled around the main fire ring and adjacent to Khalili Cantina, you'll have opportunity for community with fellow campers, to relax in the Cantina, or in our numerous hammocks around the property.

Shelter 1, the Pope, offers a double bed. (sleeps 2)

Shelter 2, the Quonset, offers two single beds. (sleeps 2)

Shelter 3, the Lunette, offers a double bed. (sleeps 2)

Shelter 4, the Gable, offers a double bed. (sleeps 2)

Shelter, 5, the Snail, offers a double bed. (sleeps 2)

Shelter 6, the Sheepherder Wagon, offers a double bed (sleeps 2)

There is floor space in each shelter to set up your cot or a couple sleeping bags for kids. You make the call as to how many people each hut will accommodate but the max that is possible is two adults/four total with kids at the very most.

We have firewood for purchase here - $5/bundle (deposit into the wood box or send via PayPal to @blueskycenter). There are multiple fire rings, so feel free to share with other guests or build your own. We have picnic benches for eating and overhead lights. A large BBQ grill is available for cooking.

We require a $25 cleaning fee for all campers bringing a pet along with them on their trip. Thank you for understanding and we look forward to seeing you and your furry friends!

All photography for commercial use must be pre-approved. Please contact us for more info.

Situated on 267 acres in the high desert, the Blue Sky Center is a great place to relax, stargaze, explore, or perhaps watch a few small planes come and go. It is an ideal basecamp for your activities in the area, which include the nearby Los Padres National Forest, Sierra Madre mountain range, Carrizo Plain National Monument, and Wind Wolves Preserve.

This trip was for small group of my remote coworkers and I to collaborate in person, get to know each other and do the kind of deep bonding one can always find on camp retreats. It was perfect!

You can stay in a modest dorm-type room in a heated building, glamping in one of the awesome hut-on-wheels like I did or you can stay in a tent or campervan like one of my coworkers. There is a centrally located fire pit with plenty of dry wood for sale at a fair price and big long outdoor tables with wifi perfect for covid-safe hangout and collaboration time.

The Cuyama Valley's beauty and community won me over and if you catch one of the Blue Sky directors ask about the incredible work they're doing with this nonprofit to aid the rural farmers and under-served. This place should definitely be supported by Hipcampers!

The Lunette Hut itself was totally charming as were the all of the other huts I peeked in. We stayed during a particularly cold week (low 30s) but the mattress warmer kept me toasty in my sleeping bag all night. (Do make sure you bring warm clothes and bedding though as the hut isn't insulated.)

I highly encourage folks to experience this wonderful Hipcamp, especially if you're with a group!

My coworker was able to pull up his truck camper right next to the huts where the rest of us were.If you go during a new moon, the stars will be phenomenal!

Had a lovely stay over New Year’s. My friends and I booked out all 6 wagons. It was a great way to enjoy New Cuyama while still being able to socially distance and spend time outside. The fire pits were a treat (we cooked breakfast over the open flames one morning), as was access to the indoor kitchen, bathrooms, and hot showers.

While in town we enjoyed several tasty meals and drinks at the Buckhorn (walking distance from Blue Sky), the petting zoo at Cuyama Oaks Ranch (10 minute drive), and a hike in the Carrizo National Monument (~1 hour drive).

The evenings back in the wagons were chilly but the heated mattresses kept us toasty.

Would definitely come again. Just know that the wagons are pretty close to each other so if you don’t go with your own group you’d be in fairly close quarters with other guests.

Thank you, Blue Sky Center, for an awesome stay!

New Cuyama is a middle of no where town making it the perfect place to disconnect from city life and connect with friends. Blue Sky has it all from kitchen & bathroom accessibility to fire pits. I stayed in a hut, while my friends pitched their own tent in dispersed area. The area past the grounds is definitely worth camping at if you choose that option. We went off roading at Ballinger which was also very cool and unique in landscape. I would definitely return!

Blue Sky Center was a perfect pit-stop on our way back to the Bay Area. The location was easy to find and basically a self-check in. There’s a kitchen that’s fully stocked with kitchenware, a fridge, drinking water, and even spices (they have cast-irons here, big plus for me!). We went during the winter time, so it was cold and quiet, with only one other couple staying on site. However, the huts are equipped with a room heater, an electric mattress warmer, and extra blankets that kept us cozy through the cold night.

A minor drawback is that there can be a bit of noise with the cars driving through or the nearby dogs howling and barking nonstop. You would also need to bring your own shampoo/conditioner, or hair drier (you are provided towels though!). Otherwise, absolutely lovely place to be as a couple and probably even better with a group of friends.

Really unique experience. Was so hot but a lot of fun! Saw a scorpion and black widow though so watch the pups. Not as remote as you think, but was still lovely.

Simply amazing, one of a kind experience! Huts were so neat and the decor throughout was also perfect. Not to mention the ride through New Cuyama was very scenic, mountains and cattle. Mel was a wonderful host. The fellow campers were also nice! We enjoyed the outdoor shower under the stars and the Buckhorn restaurant right down the door. They have a bar until midnight, cool vibe and people. Ps. The outlet with electricity was awesome and the fact you can swing your windows open at night is great, they provide you with extra tribal printed blankets to keep warm! $5 firewood to make fires and lay by the hammock. We did the PCH roadtrip starting from SF all the way down to Solvang then took the detour to New Cuyama, just to stay at the huts in blue Sky. Wouldn’t have changed a thing! Got back on the 1 to view Big sur heading north back to our SF hotel for the last night of our trip. Loved the history, thank you for sharing that with us, Melanie! :) Ari and Miguel from Miami, FL
