El Deseo Ranch is 1/2 mile east of La Cumbre Peak, the highest mountain in back of Santa Barbara. Our gate is off of East Camino Cielo, one of Santa Barbara County's most scenic mountain roads with spectacular views of the Santa Barbara Channel Islands and Santa Ynez Valley. Our 160 acre ranch offers a quiet mountain retreat in the wilderness yet is only a half hour drive to the City of Santa Barbara. Our land is mostly chaparral with pine forests on the higher peaks. There are several hiking trails nearby as well as rock climbing and bouldering. We are next to the Los Padres National Forrest. Hang gliders and paragliders have two launch spots close by. It is a popular spot for both mountain biking and road biking. We are 8 miles west of Divide Peak OHV area. We have a small herd of Miniature Nubian dairy goats on the property that enjoy hiking with guests. We also have chickens and four friendly dogs. We welcome visiting dogs who are friendly to strangers and new dogs. We can not accept any aggressive dogs on our property.

We offer private tent camping with scenic mountain and ocean views. Our tent area is about 60 feet from our parking area so you will need to walk a bit away from your car. We welcome car campers but our parking areas are not as private as our tent camping areas. Our RV space is just off our driveway so you will experience some traffic although it is usually less than 10 cars per day.

The setting of El Deseo Ranch is nothing short of magical. We arrived in the evening to a blanket of stars and absolute silence. It was everything we needed after the stress of 2021. I haven't experienced skies that clear in the two decades that I've lived in southern CA. (It was better than Joshua Tree.)

We woke early to watch the sunrise while enjoying our coffee with the ranch dogs. (They are adorable and so friendly!)

The campsite is well equipped with a hammock, large table and multiple chairs, and a very clean composting toilet.

We didn't have enough time for a goat hike, but we met the small herd and had a lovely chat with the host, Andrea, before departing. We will definitely be back.

We loved our trip to the El Deseo! Amazing weekend. Incredible views. You feel like you’re at the top of the world. Very Private camp sites equipped with tables and chairs. The dogs are so welcoming and stood guard by our tent and went on hiked with us. Andrea even brought the goats by for a visit. We’ll be back.

El Deseo Ranch is a good camping option in the mountains above Santa Barbara. The location requires driving up a tight twisty and narrow road, so definitely do not recommend going at night!
We did not explore the property much beyond our camp area, as there were signs posted restricting hipcampers from driving further into the ranch.
The camp area consists of several openings in the brush, where ground has been cleared and leveled. You will have to carry items from your vehicle, so a lot of back and forth to load/unload and it's a pain with heavy things like canopies and portable fridge.
We went in mid-July, and even though weather reports showed Santa Barbara at 72 degrees, it was 95 up at the ranch! So hot, and the flies in the morning and evening were unbearable! Not like a couple of flies bothering you as would be expected outdoors, but like dozens in your face and on your food!
Andrea the camp host is very friendly and communicative. She even brought over week old baby goats for the kids to meet and feed.
Heads up that there is no reception driving up the mountain or when on the ranch. With a short steep hike up a mountain next to camp you can see Santa Barbara and the ocean below, and get decent cell reception.

Dometic fridge/freezer setup with 100ah battery and 100w solar panel. Not enough watts to keep battery fully charged in 95 degree weather and with multiple campers opening the fridge frequently. All items in picture are provide by the host. Good place to setup camp kitchen, and it's an area closest to parking.View of some of the flat area for tents.View from the top of the little hill between the camp kitchen area and the graded spots for tents. We ended up putting our 3 tents side by side in a parking spot next to the road.

This was such a fun experience!! Andrea and Paul were awesome hosts and they have a beautiful ranch. It’s up in the mountains with gorgeous views and access to hiking but still is in close proximity to Santa Barbara and the beach. It’s also quiet and has incredible star gazing! 10/10 recommend. Also, make goat’s milk! It was so fun :)

Our experience was brief but wonderful! We arrived later in the evening but Andrea still came by to check on us, give us a tour and introduce us to her new baby goats. Great host! The campground had everything we needed, I can’t wait to go back and hike some of the many trails in the area.

Privacy in the mountains with great views of the coast! This is the most I've paid for a camping spot but there is a lot to justify the costs - safety, tons of private space to roam, plenty of nice and thoughtful touches throughout (umbrellas for shade, nice hammock, good outdoor bathroom solution etc.) that make you think "wow this was totally worth springing for". The hosts are very friendly and definitely want you to have a good time. OMG and the dog(s) that visit you are super cute!
