Watch for wildlife through the windows, and enjoy a walk around our farm when you’re not out exploring nearby attractions along the Cowichan River.

Shawl Farm sits on the north side of the Cowichan River and is a working farm with gardens and animals, so pets are not allowed. The school bus is outfitted with a bed and a couple of chairs, as well as a table and chairs outside. There are no other amenities but lots of opportunities to spot local wildlife such as white-tailed deer and elk. You may run into other campers – the farm also rents a tipi and allows tent camping.

The farm is conveniently located between Victoria and Nanaimo just off Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway. Chemainus River Provincial Park is about 15 km to the north, and Cowichan River Provincial Park is about the same distance to the west. For groceries, shops, and other services, the city of Duncan is less than 10 minutes away.

The converted bus stay on this property was amazing! We had a nice cozy sleep in this unique bus. There is also tent camping options on the property. There is a outhouse and well water to do your dishes. The bus was in a nice and secluded spot and even had a nice area set up close by to do your cooking at! There were two different spots to have a campfire with wood provided. Rupert had mentioned if we go down through the creek and keep going through the forested area into a clearing, we may see some Elk. We sure weren’t disappointed! We first went adventuring down to the creek which was so beautiful, large logs had fallen over the creek that we could climb onto, it was a lovely experience. Then through the bush we went to the open clearing where we hung out for a good hour. After about the first 20 mins we had an Elk walk into the clearing and hang out for a bit, followed by a black tail deer and another elk!! It was really cool. I would definitely recommend staying here, and I would go back in a heartbeat!!

I had a wonderful stay on Shawl farm. Rupert took the time to show me all around the property. The schoolbus was clean and comfortable and I appreciated having access to fresh produce from the gardens.

Shawl Farms is a must stay!!! Our host Rupert made us feel at home and welcomed into this small community. The property is a hidden gem and is an experience within itself.

We stayed on the converted school bus, which has a wonderful story behind it. It is a comfortable and secluded space, fit with a bed, chairs, and small table. The farm also has a teepee, and campsites with a covered communal cooking area.

We had a day filled with activities which included E-biking around the town, farmers market (on Saturdays), cider tasting at Valley Cider, attempted Averill Creek Vineyard wine tasting (be sure to book a reservation in advance!), and ended our day with an amazing river float near the property with tubes rented from Rupert.

Other add-ons we would recommend are getting farm fresh eggs and digging potatoes grown on the property.

All and all and amazing stay and we look forward to coming back as soon as we can!
