We are very excited to be named a Best Of Hipcamp 2023 Runner-up! Frankly, it was a goal. We figured if we won then so did our guests. Thank you for all of your wonderful reviews and helpful suggestions! Learn more about this land: The property was a farm until 30 years ago. It's been virtually untouched since then. Chambers Creek runs thru the west side. And you'll find fossils in the rock walls. Off the Beaten Path @ Cricket Ranch provides a true back to nature environment for campers, sometimes called "backcountry camping". Located on 50 acres of private forest, field, and valley, our campsites are very secluded and separated by acres of woodland. Each layout is unique, embracing what nature has provided. Backpacking (or wagoning) to your camp from the parking area is necessary as the 5' wide paths do not accommodate cars/trucks. Hiking distance from parking area: (1) Camp Cricket is 600 Ft. (2) Haen Hollow is 250 ft. (3) Rocky Top is 700 ft. (4) Grapeline is 1000 ft.  Feel fee to explore the land! We are located near the Niagara Escarpment so you might even find a 460 million year old fossil on one of the field rock walls. Keep it! So we can keep a count of how many are found, and out of an overabundance of curiosity, please let us know and send some pics of your find.   Chambers Creek (small trout stream on the headwaters of the Milwaukee River-North Branch) winds through the valley on the west side of Cricket Ranch, providing a spot to cool your feet, stone step, or just listen to the relaxing sound of a babbling brook. The creek is overgrown with brush so access is limited to a couple spots at this time. We intend to clear some of the underbrush in the near future to allow for better enjoyment and management of this invaluable natural resource. Near by: Kettle Moraine National Forest is a 10 minute drive, boasting great hiking and the can't-miss-it view from atop Parnell Tower. Lake Ellen has a nice no-fee public boat landing just 2 miles away. The lake has clear water and is stocked periodically with Pike and Walleye. It is surprising how un-busy this lake is so bring your boat, kayak, paddle board, and/or assorted flotation devices and check it out. Our parking area can accommodate boat trailers during your stay. Top Upcoming Local Events (distance): Autumn 2021 (everywhere): It is a MAJOR event!

Rocky Top
Popped a Squat at Rocky Top
I was shocked when I first arrived because I saw sleds and wagons available to use to get my campin' equipment to my site faster to enjoy the beautiful secluded serene trip I had planned for my Outdoors Unsupervised YouTube channel. I camped at Rocky Top with an amazin' view of the sunset every evenin'. I saw some amazin' skies with bright stars and woke up to birds singin', very very meditational for me to say the least. I cooked some really gr8 meals in the fire ring and a metal grate provided while I enjoyed the peacefulness and place to myself. I walked down to the creek and had got water to wash my dishes but while down there I spotted a deer as I sat listenin' to the creek named Garth Brooks named after the owner's Grandfather Garth. First time usin' the Hipcamp app and I must say I am a big fan, specially with Jay that responded to all my messages in a speedy time. I will definitely be back to visit in the near future. I would recommend any of the 5 campsites he has available. You can even rent out a tent for only $50 for the whole stay (not per night) which was mindblowin'.

Haen Hollow
Special place
Hiking this place was special. It was like going back in time with all of the old stone walls and the opportunity to let my pup run free was wonderful. Sites were well maintained, wood was chopped and available, porta was very clean. Note to campers, there is a bit of Hwy sound and cars passed by regularly till about 7:30 pm. Some may like the 'white noise', others may not. In any case, very nice location and the area offers so much - wonderful hiking at Kettle Moraine Northern Unit, cute coffee Cafes and great food in Dundee, Plymouth, Elkhart Lake, plus much more. Enjoy exploring!

Haen Hollow
Great spot! We're van campers so stayed in Haen Hollow. It felt private being surrounded by the trees, didn't hear the other campsite at all. And having a garbage/recycling can was a plus. Easy to follow directions.

Grapeline
Directions to the property and site were easy to follow. The trail to Grapeline is well maintained and was an easy walk. Having the bell tent set up for us made the trip so much easier. Fire pit, cooking grate, picnic table, and trash onsight was so helpful. We had a rainy weekend so I didn't get to explore the property as much as I wanted, but my kids had a wonderful time roaming the trails while I did all the work ;-) Quiet, beautiful setting, my kids asked when we left "can we come back again?" - plan on it!

Haen Hollow
Wet camping weekend
A rainy weekend. The owner was very communicative even texting us when he found out about unexpected road closure preventing us getting to the camp site. We arrived in rain after dark and he was kind enough to have tarped the firewood we had requested. Portapotty was very, and wagons were available to haul if needed. Cooking grate at camp site was an unexpected bonus. The camp site was great and we were able to star gaze and see the milky way on the second night with our fire. Even with other camp sites in use we didn't see anyone and you feel you are alone in the woods. Lots of rainy day activities in the area if sitting in the tent in the rain with 3 kids is not your cup of tea. We had a great time and can't wait to get back.
