~ Voted West Virginia's No. 1 HIPCAMP, three years in a row!! ~ The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few very small campers (w/o hookups). Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy. Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 tubes available for your use, and 3 kayaks, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small shed down at camp that contains rope, tarps, shovel, shade tent, tackle box, extra torch fuel etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or/ contribute to it. :) This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out. If I do not respond soon after your inquiry, it's because I am without reception. Even if your inquiry expires in 24 hours, I will still get back to you! Thanks in advance for your patience. There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float. Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :) *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, there is a back way in over the ridge. You will absolutely need 4 wheel drive with clearance and it takes about 30 minutes longer and a sense of adventure- but you'll be rewarded with beautiful views and waterfalls at the switchbacks:) This route in is only an option when the bridge is flooded, as it is a private road that has many gates. I will provide all necessary information before your stay regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable and you decide not to come. Sadly, the floating dock you see in the older pictures did not make it through the river ice last winter. However, the deck is now turned into another tent platform! In addition to that, there is now a 9x14 pavilion and a porta john for your use! *Please visit Cacaponriver.org prior to your stay for more info on our beautiful river:)~ Voted West Virginia's No. 1 HIPCAMP,  three years in a row!! ~ The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The Byrd's Nest on the River
Beautiful property on the river. Easy to get to and spacious. Kara was very responsive at all my questions. During the winter months the cabin is visible from the river site but it made my stay in the woods more comfortable. The drive in is amazing! Have your phone ready to record the views, the drive over the bridge and little streams along the way. Being black queer and female I was presently surprised to not have to drive through a sea of confederate/trump flags. This is not an issue for most but for minority campers it can feel uneasy, this was never the case. Everyone we spoke to was very friendly. It’s also very dog friendly and Kara has a great run lead for pups that can’t be off leash! I had a wonderful stay cooking and enjoy nature in the winter.

The Byrd's Nest on the River
All of our friends and family told us we were insane for camping in December. Oh did we prove them wrong! THE BEST spot we have been to yet. Truly a gorgeous campsite.

The Byrd's Nest on the River
Wow what a camp site. The views are gorgeous, the amenities continued to surprise us. Everyone forgets a few things when they go camping, and my trip was no exception. Kara and her community hipcamp shed had my back though. Kara was a wonderful host, even over Thanksgiving weekend when she was away and we felt very welcomed. We are already planning another trip in the spring and counting down the days until we can get on the Capacon again. I cannot recommend this site enough.

The Byrd's Nest on the River
Perfect place to get away.
Kara was very communicative and we knew exactly what to expect of the property when we arrived. Once we pulled in it was better than we expected. There was a covered tent platform which kept us dry when it rained out first night. The porch overlooking the river was a perfect place to have coffee. There is a reason Kara’s place is a top rated HipCamp. There is something magical about her property.

The Byrd's Nest on the River
B-day Excursion @ The Byrd's Nest
Our 3 day (2 night) stay at The Byrd's Nest on the River was an all around amazing time. The host was unbelievably accommodating & communicative (which really helped us prepare well for the excursion) and the site was beautiful. Right on the Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV (20 min from Berkeley Springs) this site truly could not be more serene and relaxing. And on top of that, you can tell the host has put a lot of time and effort into building out the area - thinking through all the amenities that could come in hand for prospective campers. 6/5 for this site. Couldn't recommend it more to anyone looking to get away from the Metropolitan area of the DMV & spend some time in nature without having to travel over 3 hours.
