Creeping Thyme Forest

Early settlers of this area were mainly Scotch-Irish and there are several dominant family names that still populate these areas. Tobacco was grown in the area for many years, but now is rarely seen. This whole valley between two mountain ranges was chosen in the 1970's to be dammed and made into a reservoir for a hydroelectric power plant; however, the residents at the time formed a strong resistance, went to Washington, and eventually blocked the development, preserving its natural beauty. This land is within the Jefferson National Forest. It was owned for many years by Roy Light, owner of a nearby lumber mill, but when he passed away, his children cleared the timber and moved away. Since then, the diverse deciduous forest has regrown quickly. A rustic cabin made from salvaged hand-hewn logs was built on the site in 2014 and an alpaca farm was established; however, the owners had to move away due to employment changes. Currently, we are working on developing a perennial food forest, as well as dairy goats, and chickens.

Elkhorn Inn & Theatre

The land is on our property, next to the Elkhorn Inn, which is on Route 52, in Landgraff, WV (between the towns of Eckman, and Kimball, WV). The area includes our garden, and is on Elkhorn Creek, and has a view of the passing trains (the Norfolk Southern "Pocahontas" line), which makes it very popular with railfan guests! There is potable drinking water available, and campers may use restroom and shower facilities in the Inn. We are in the mountains of McDowell County, which is known for having the best ATV trails in the eastern USA (there are 100s of miles of FREE trails in our county, as well as the famed "Hatfield-McCoy Trail System trails, and as it is Legal to ride ATVs on the roads here, you can ride your ATV from the Inn right to the trails! There are ramps (a wild garlic-onion beloved of chefs!), to pick in the spring, and wild blackberries to pick in July-August! There is great trout fishing (fly-fishing and regular fishing; we promote "catch-and-release" fishing) on Elkhorn Creek, which runs right behind the Inn and has been called "the best wild trout stream in the USA" by Trout Unlimited members, and world-class railfanning, aka "trainspotting", and photography ops! (The Elkhorn Inn was called "the best legal train-watching location in the USA" in Railfan and Railroad Magazine!) Other area fun includes hiking at a State Park and State Forest, a fun mountain golf course (9 holes and a cart for 2 people is only $22, and you can ride your ATV to the golf course!), two nearby lakes, gorgeous leaf pepping and the Bramwell Oktoberfest in the fall, and numerous historic sites to visit, including the "coal baron mansions" and restored train station museum in Bramwell, Coalwood, of "Rocket Boys" and "Oktober Sky" book and movie fame, Kimball (home of the first and only surviving Memorial Bldg, for Black Soldiers of WWI), Welch, War, Roderfield, Jolo, the Exhibition Coal Mine in Pocahontas, VA, etc. There are several diners and fast-food places nearby, and Dinners at the Inn are available by reservation. The "Coal Heritage Trail " Elkhorn Inn was built in 1922 by Empire Coal & Coke Company as their "Miner's Clubhouse". The only surviving historic building in the area, it was restored after the floods of 2001/2002 by Dan & Elisse Clark, and we opened our new home as the Elkhorn Inn in 2003. The Inn has been featured on HGTV, Speed Channel, and in other media, and Dan won the Coal Heritage Trail Preservation Award from America's ByWays for his restoration. The land next to the inn once held the Landgraff Coal Mine tipple and approx. 30 coal company houses, all of which were destroyed by the 2001/2002 floods. The land now houses our garden, parking area, and a place for camping. Deer, Racoons, Opossums, Bobcats, Bear, Fox, Groundhogs, and Turkey have been spotted on the property. We are a great spot for bird watching as well! Camp Grassland: Two of our prepped campsites are on a flattened area of the hillside field with access to a fire pit, log bench, and porta-potty. This location is in direct sun with beautiful views and easy access from the road. Parking at the top of the field is recommended unless you have a 4WD vehicle. Farmhouse Holler: 2nd Campsite is located next to our old farmhouse on a lower section of the property. Its near the natural spring and is shaded. There are no convenient bathroom facilities at this location so it is recommended to bring your own. Reaching the porta-potty would require an extensive uphill hike or driving around to the other entrance. To reach this campsite, the driveway could be considered rough terrain so drive slowly. Lowered vehicles or those with little ground clearance are not recommended. Each campsite has a max occupancy of 2 people. If you need space for more campers, please reach out to us about how many are in your party. We can host groups with advanced notification. Overlanding vehicles are welcome. Attractions: If you are looking for birds-eye view of the area, visit the Mendota Fire Tower only 3.2 mile away. You can see it from the farm and see the farm from it. It's about a 15 minute hike from the road. You can choose the mildly challenging way up or take the old roadway for a smoother walk. Clinch River is only 20 minutes away. Cool off in the river or enjoy kayaking and tubing opportunities from Clinch River Adventures. Closest convenience store is about 15 minutes away. Closest Grocery store is about 20 minutes away. Friendly-leashed pets are welcome on the property. Remember to always keep your pet tethered as we have free roaming animals on the property. Never leave pets unattended on the property. Ted's Wildlife Habitat

Once a dairy farm for over 200 years, we acquired the property 16 years ago and immediately started on the task of reverting the property back to it's pre dairy farm state. Working with the Forestry department and other agencies, we have reforested over 30 acres with over 6,000 trees. We have also created a wildlife habitat ( Wildlife corridor) which has succeeded in bringing back species of birds that have long been gone from the valley. Additionally, the pond in the back of the property was dying, now it is thriving! No logging on this property since 1964 and we plan to keep it that way. Just today, there were a bunch of wild turkeys in the front field which is now encircled with chinquapins. We are happy to announce that starting in the Fall, we begin the process of converting the final 9 acres of hay into wild flower fields. This has been in the works for years and we are so excited that it is finally happening! You get away for privacy, not crowds. Choose your own special piece of paradise. The property has multiple fields, the side of a forest covered mountain, and sites along the creek. We back up to Jefferson National Forest. This property is really more for the tent camper that does not need a lot of amenities. If you have a small RV ( like a tear drop) or vehicle you can sleep in, we do have flat fields that can accommodate you. Note, there is no water or electrical hookup. We have a nice pond in the back of the property located just before the mountain starts. We are more than happy to hike up the "hill" with you and show you some tent sites with spectacular views.
