Abrams Creek Campground/Retreat

25 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents20 acres · Mt. Storm, WV
Abrams Creek is like camping in a nature preserve, rather than in a commercial campground.  On our campground, there are no generators, loud electronics, or other things that would distract from appreciating the sights and sounds of this pristine natural environment.   And this is always a great place to beat the heat! We have a mountain climate; the peak temperature most days in the summer is in the high 70's or very low 80's, and at night, temperatures go down to about 60.  You'll be breathing cool, clean, fresh mountain air all day long! Hot showers are included, and all sanitary facilities are *sterilized* between guests.  We have taken every measure to safeguard your health! We are located in the mountainous Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia. Our vision is an environmentally conscious, eco-friendly campground developed in harmony with nature. We are not only a business, but also serve as an anchor for others who want to live more simply and close to the earth. The concept of rural revitalization means reinventing rural life so that it is economically sound, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally satisfying. Ask any of our staff if you would like to learn more about this!

Camping at the Island Farm!

1 site · RV, Tent10 acres · Junior, WV
Welcome to our Island Farm! We're located between Davis, Parsons, and Elkins. Dolly Sods, Canaan, Audra State Park, the Tygart River, the Cheat River, Seneca Rocks, and Tygart Lake are all a simple and scenic trip away. The land itself is 10 acres. The main camp area is on flat field and approximately 4 acres. Here is the secret recipe to this camp site: It will be all yours! We only offer a single primitive site per night. There are no neighbors (at least the human kind) visible from anywhere on the main field. Very minimal light pollution. The stars are clearly visible on a clear night. There are also no utilities. This includes water, electricity, or available enclosed shelters. Verizon and AT&T have strong signals in the field. There is a metal carport that has a concrete pad along with a Porta John for privacy. There are also some storage buildings on site. There is a gas station (Sheetz in Belington, WV) within 5 miles of the farm site and a Dollar General within 3 miles. Beyond that, Elkins has plenty of store options if you need supplies. Interstate 79 is 32 miles away. We are in the process of developing the far corner of the main field into an active hops farm and are members of a WV Co-Hop. Again: this site is secluded and your group will be the only people there during your stay. We will provide detailed directions when you make your reservation. The driveway is steep and could cause issues for two wheel drive vehicles in winter. If it's rained extensively there could also be some muddy areas which we ask that you try to avoid.

The best camping near Audra State Park guide

Overview

About

Do you love water parks but hate all that fake plastic stuff and chlorine? You’ve gotta make your next camping adventure a visit to West Virginia’s Audra State park. Straddling the expansive Middle Fork River, this deeply wooded wonderland is known for its white-water kayaking, natural swimming pool carved out of gorgeous bedrock, and the Alum Cave overhang. Wooden walkways weave under the intensely curved stone, winding around shimmering turquoise waters that provide tranquil hikes and photo opportunities that are almost too good to be true. There are tons of picnic areas near the river, so pack yourself some snacks and take in the scenery with a sammy or perhaps even a cheese plate! Be sure to get out to the surrounding neighborhoods, too—there are plenty of historic covered bridges in this secluded setting.

Notable campgrounds

  • The main campground offers a mix of 67 tent and trailer sites, each equipped with a picnic table and grill for a classic camping experience.
  • Convenient amenities like coin-operated washing machines and dryers, along with two modern bathhouses, ensure a comfortable stay amid nature.
  • A centrally located playground provides a space for families to enjoy, making it an ideal spot for creating lasting memories.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Arrive early, as all sites at Audra State Park are first-come, first-served, with no reservations available.
  • Visit during off-peak times, such as weekdays or outside of summer months, for a better chance at securing a site.
  • Keep an eye on the park's open and close dates, typically mid-April to mid-October, to plan your trip accordingly.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park is full, ensuring you have a backup plan for your outdoor adventure.

When to go

The best time to visit Audra State Park is from mid-April to mid-October when the campground is open. Summer offers lush greenery and full access to park amenities, while fall brings a spectacular display of colors. Winter visits are less ideal due to the park's closure and chilly conditions.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly, as conditions can change rapidly in the West Virginia mountains.
  • Be aware that the campground closes from mid-October to mid-April; call ahead for exact dates.
  • Remember, there are no reservable campsites; all are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • For safety, familiarize yourself with the park's wildlife and bring appropriate gear for outdoor activities.
  • Don't forget to bring coins for the washing machines and dryers, adding convenience to your camping experience.
