100 Acre Wood

3 sites · RVs, Tents101 acres · Draper, VA
100 Acres of forested land with scattered clearings that are connected by various roads/trails throughout. Over the years cutting roads has been a hobby that has resulted in miles of cleared pathways throughout the property that are perfect for hiking, running, cycling and ATV’s. The property includes a stream, several ravines, ridge lines and trails to explore. We frequently encounter deer, and see the occasional turkey, bear, and Bigfoot. We are new to hosting campers and are happy to help make accommodations to help you have an enjoyable stay. We only allow 3 groups at a time on the property to ensure that all guests continue to feel complete privacy from others. Things to watch out for other than the wildlife mentioned above the two main concerns in this part of Virginia are deer ticks and poison ivy.

Why be Square?! Blue Ridge Yurt

2 sites · Lodging2 acres · Pilot, VA
Blue Ridge Yurts is a woman-owned company in Floyd, Virginia, started by my mother, Sharon. We were staying at Treebones, a yurt 'glampground' in Big Sur, California, and fell in love with yurts together. My mom said, "I think I could build one of these," and the company was born! She does all the woodworking, using sustainable practices, with locally-sourced wood, and her best friend Kathy does the fabric end of things. I was one of her early guinea pigs, and love my yurt property dearly <3 This 24' yurt sits on a beautiful private acreage off an end-state maintenance road, with biking and hiking trails just a 20 minute drive from the touristy town of Floyd, Virginia. There's a steam shower sauna, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a deck overlooking the mountains with a table and seating. Enjoy!

IRON Peak Ranch

2 sites · RVs, Tents88 acres · Wytheville, VA
We have traced this farm's history back to the 1750's when a mill was built on the creek. There is a log home that we know that was built in 1840 still on the premises. The white farm house across from the camp sites was built in 1877. The fish hatchery that is still in operation today was built by the Federal Government in 1923. Learn more about this land: Camp site situated along 3 separate creeks connected by one large private 11 acre field. Tate Run/ Reed Creek/ Venrick Run. The farm house is across the road and the whole property comprises of 88 acres of woods and pasature. The farm house was built in 1877 and the Ranch currently operates with 30 head of cattle and a working trout hatchery. We have traced this farm lineage back to the 1750's when a mill was constructed at the meeting of Tate Run and Reed Creek by Swiss Immigrant Henry Grubb. Camping here along Reed Creek is peaceful and quiet. Located just a few short miles from town it is easy to get to ...but a long way from the world at large. In Short, it is lovely and we hope you enjoy it.

Periwinkle Branch Family Farm

10 sites · RVs, Tents68 acres · Max Meadows, VA
Learn more about this land:Nestled between Virginia Tech University (Blacksburg, VA) and Bristol Motor Speedway is a historical family farm 15 minutes from route 81. New River Trail State Park is 3.5 miles from the family farm, so bring the kayaks and canoes and enjoy the New River and the surrounding area of Southwest Virginia! As you turn off of the county road (607) you will find yourself at the classic red farm gate of Periwinkle Branch Family Farm. This Southwest Virginia farm was once an iron mining farm. During your private stay, you will find old historical farming equipment hidden amongst the landscape and even old mining buildings ("rock huts" now toppled over but once was part of the operation...see if you can find them!) The neighbors and family have between 30-50 Black Angus cows that you will see grazing the 30 acres of rolling pasture. You may camp wherever you like! I recommend on the hill behind the 100-year-old farmhouse, right before the 30 acres of wooded hiking, or by the spring house. You will see turkeys, deer, and other amazing creatures as you walk the pasture and woods. Follow the natural spring up the mountain and try to catch a glimpse of Perwinkle Mountain and the beautiful landscape of Southwest Virginia.

The best camping near New River Trail State Park guide

Overview

About

A state park that's 57 miles long—and skinny as a snake? That's the story of this park that crosses Grayson, Carroll, Wythe and Pulaski Counties.

Hop on your bike for a mostly flat ride that takes you along the banks of the New River for 39 miles. In the Foster Falls area, equestrians can enjoy guided horseback trips and a horse arena. All trails are beautifully maintained.

Stop to rent canoes, tubes or kayaks for drifting on the river, or take advantage of boat launches to get some fishing in. The historic Shot Tower, where ammunition was made 200 years ago, lets you explore the past. Watch for the periodic guided tours.

Four different primitive campgrounds welcome tent campers. Double Shoals Campground is first-come, first-served, but all the rest require reservations. Cliffview Campground has three equestrian spots.

For a unique experience, book your spot at Baker Island Campground—And get ready to do some paddling, since the only access is by kayak or canoe.

Notable campgrounds

  • Cliffview Campground: Offers primitive tent camping with stunning views of Chestnut Creek and access to the New River Trail.
  • Millrace Campground: Nestled by Foster Falls, this campground provides a serene riverside setting for tent camping.
  • Double Shoals Campground: An honor system campground accessible only by river or trail, perfect for a secluded retreat.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak seasons, to secure your ideal campsite.
  • Consider weekday camping for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations for last-minute opportunities.
  • Explore nearby camping options for alternative stays amid the park's beauty.

When to go

The best time to visit New River Trail State Park is from spring to fall, when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Winter months can be less ideal due to colder temperatures and potential trail closures for maintenance.

Know before you go

  • Check for trail closures due to renovations, especially around bridge areas.
  • Remember, the park is open daily from dawn to dusk, with the park office operating Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
  • Parking is $7 per standard vehicle; have cash or credit ready for self-pay lots.
  • Bring a copy of a negative Coggins report if you're planning to ride horses on the trail.
  • Accessible facilities are available, including certain campsites and restrooms.
