The ferry to Vermont if you wish to cross over the pond (Lake Champlain) is about 45 minutes. And if you love equestrian sports, the Willow Hill Equestrian Center is less than 1.5 miles away. The best camping near Lake Carmi State Park guide

Overview

About

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the border between the US and the “Great White North,” Lake Carmi State Park is an expansive locale with contemplative views. If northern pike and walleyes sound like your kind of dinner, then skip the store and pack your rod. The park has two miles of lake-front turf, with plenty of room for two swimming beaches, boat rentals, and canoeing. Adding to the classic Vermont landscape of forest and water, is the park’s peat bogs which lay off the southern end of the lake--steeped with mystery, the spindly spruce trees and mosses make for an unusual hike.

Notable campgrounds

  • Tent/RV & Lean-to Sites - Experience the classic camping vibe with facilities for both tents and RVs, surrounded by verdant forestry.
  • Cabins - Enjoy a rustic retreat in cozy cabins, offering a charming and comfortable stay in the wilderness.
  • Cottages - Ideal for larger groups or families, the cottages provide a homey atmosphere amid the park's natural splendor.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot, as campgrounds fill up quickly, especially during peak season.
  • Consider visiting during the weekdays for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellation policies for last-minute openings.
  • Explore nearby camping options to maximize your chances of finding the perfect site.

When to go

The best time to visit Lake Carmi State Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and all park facilities are open. Spring and fall offer quieter visits but with limited services. Winters can be harsh, with many amenities closed, making it less ideal for a visit.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly to ensure a comfortable visit.
  • Be aware of park operating hours, typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your trip within these times.
  • Review the park's safety guidelines, especially if you plan to engage in water activities or hiking.
  • Accessibility options are available; contact the park office for specific needs.
  • Remember to bring cash or a card for day use fees and any additional amenities you may require.
