The best camping near Fairfield Lake State Park guide

Overview

About

Bathers come from far and wide to enjoy the heated waters thanks to the TXU Big Brown power plant! Don't worry, it's not as suspicious as it sounds. The waters, which sometimes reach as high as 107 degrees Fahrenheit, simply act as a cooling reservoir for the plant.

This Texas state park is a particularly good spot for nature study and bird watching. Between November and February, you've got a solid chance of spying majestic bald eagles. Fairfield is also a great destination for amateur fishermen. The lake is home to freshwater redfish, largemouth bass, carp and more. Bring your own canoe or kayak, or just hit one of the fishing piers.

A total of 139 campsites, the majority equipped with electricity connections, make overnighting fun and easy. This park's a popular one! Call ahead to make reservations if you're coming in the busy spring and summer seasons.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Fairfield Lake State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warmth perfect for water activities, though it can be quite hot. Winters are typically mild but can be unpredictable, so check the forecast before planning your trip.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's operating hours, typically from 8:30am to 5pm, before your visit.
  • Stay aware of local wildlife and follow safety guidelines to ensure a secure experience.
  • Some areas may be closed for maintenance or due to weather conditions; verify accessibility beforehand.
  • Facilities such as restrooms and picnic areas are available, but it's wise to bring essentials.
  • Remember to dispose of trash responsibly to maintain the park's natural beauty.
