We're a five acre piece of an historic Texas ranch in Southwest San Antonio, just 20-minutes from downtown, sitting along the Medina River. Come for the day or stay the night for some primitive camping. We've got plenty of room for tents, roof-top-tent setups or car/van dry-camping. We’re currently in the building/restoring process, but we’ll have some electrical, drinking water, fire pits, plenty of shade, compost toilets, water in the river, and plenty of good vibes.  Old Herrera Ranch has been in our family since the early 1800's and holds a lot history. A couple of our old buildings, the "jacals", are dated from around the 1830-40's. You'll also see the old "Dance Hall" which is great for hanging out or even some cover if it rains. They say that Santa Anna's army, invading from Mexico, may have crossed through our area on their way to the Alamo. This may be because our part of the river includes some of the more shallow areas of the Medina River. For more information, feel free to take a look at our page on the San Antonio Conservation Society's website https://farmandranch.omeka.net/exhibits/show/blasherreraranch We use Hipcamp to help maintain, preserve, and restore the land my family loves so deeply. We're excited to share it with you and see what all we'll be able to do. Thank you in advance for your support! Old Herrera Ranch - Medina River
Sweet Ol’ Somerset
Where to begin… This land, Dax… nothing short of incredible. Dax was patient, flexible and one of the kindest host to ever work with. Our 5 day stay turned into about a month! The river was a godsend for our pup and even next to the highway, never once did it bother us. The energy of the property, the daily red cardinals, proximity to town, we couldn’t have asked for anything better, really! So grateful for this place and Dax at a time that made us feel held, happy and so safe. A high recommendation, to say the least… If ever to return to SA, we now have a place to call home.

Old Herrera Ranch - Medina River
History, Nature, and Romantic Spot!
Out of the 9 Hipcamp sites I've been to this year, this one is one of the best so far. I thought the land was diverse with upper hill top flat land that overlooks Medina River down below. I loved the history and the historic buildings on this land. I loved the massive cypress trees. This land was very clean and green (Feburary!), perfect for impressive date nights down by the river during the week when there are less people or maybe none at all, plus you can leave the land easily if need be. Arrive early to claim your spot. Also, this land is not totally flat down by the river if you're pitching a tent. So for my diehard overlanding community, this land is more communal and prepared in the since that you can get electric, water, and restroom if you need it. If you visit during busier days, you'll likely camp next to others in relative proximity. This land is not total isolation in nature from the outside world as it is right off the main road that leads you back to 410. You will hear sounds of the passing traffic and potentially from other campers as well at night and during the day. I'm not sure how much of the land you can explore for overlanding, but from what I saw you may not be able to venture that much further away from the main entrance which means you are camping near the main entrance probably less than .25 miles from the entry gate. I think it's still worth checking out to see if it fits what you seek. I had a great time and booked another night upon arrival.

This spot made my list to revisit
This was a great camping spot at Dax’s land. I really loved the history of the land as well after chatting over the phone with Dax and after staying one night, I booked another one. I really enjoyed the river front and the historic buildings were beautiful and awesome to explore as well. This spot really is a hidden gem and is perfect for a date night camping by the river without having to go totally off grid with beautiful massive cypress trees. Your date will be very impressed and is close to SA. Be sure to get there early to claim your dispersed and primitive camping spot before others arrive. I recommend going during the week. The explorable land isn’t as vast for overlanding folks so you may end up camping semi next to others on busier days. I love how this land has some layers to it. You can camp above land or down below by the river. You can get a nice view of the river from the land above where most people camp which is also where the toilets are. This is my 9th hipcamp spot i have explored so far in central Texas. For what I wanted to accomplish this spot is perfect. However if you are a diehard overlanding type of person seeking total nature and isolation, keep in mind this land is communal and you will hear sounds of traffic on busier days or from other campers. I really enjoyed this spot and it’s proximity to San Antonio. Thanks for sharing Dax!

Badass
Badass. Pirate ship! Dance hall immaculate. The portal on the other side of the river looked interesting.

Dax's property was fantastic, just what we wanted for an easy first overnighter for our son. He had a blast at the river, and the site was perfect for our tent and table.
