Bar4L Ranch '24 Solar Eclipse Event

251 sites · RVs, Tents300 acres · Lampasas, TX
Welcome to our family's ranch and retreat from the big city where we are hosting a 2024 Solar Eclipse camping event! We love it in the Hill Country and want to share our little piece of heaven with the solar eclipse enthusiasts or those who just want to get out of town to enjoy a family-friendly outdoor campout on a working cattle ranch. Lampasas is known as the Gateway to the Texas Hill Country where the bluebonnets and wildflowers are in full bloom in March/April. It is the prettiest time of year to come in for a visit! The Bar4L Ranch is a little over 300 acres of rolling hills with 3 small ponds and dry creek that runs through the property. We have about 250 acres of cleared grazing pastures for our Black Angus cattle and another 50 acres of wildlife areas that are heavily wooded. We have neighbors with high-fenced ranches on 3 of the 4 bordering fence lines where they raise exotics. If you look hard across the high fences, you may get a peak at a variety of exotic animals. The Bar4L is located in the Texas Hill Country where there are alot of old Oak trees, Mesquite trees, Cedar trees and cactus. The area is typically very dry with hard rocky soil that can be hard to dig into so bring appropriate tools if you need to dig into the ground for tent stakes. While visiting the Bar4L, you will surely see some wildlife other than the Black Angus cattle and our horse. You may see things like birds, armadillos, deer, racoons, jackrabbits, an occasional hog, and yes, even snakes and scorpions. We don’t see them often but if we do it is typically a rattlesnake. We will have a community area with Texas-style games like cornhole, hillbilly golf, and even learn to rope with a cattle dummy and depending on the number of bookings, we may have some food vendors/trucks. At dusk, we will have an outdoor movie under the stars. And you can’t have a campout without a large community campfire where you can bring your own guitar and stuff for S'mores! And don’t forget to do some star gazing while you are far away from the big city lights. To ensure everyone’s safety, we will have a safety team during the event and a nurses station for minor injuries. The City of Lampasas is a 15 minute drive from the ranch and the local law and fire departments have been advised of our private camping event in case of an emergency. We will also have some porta-potties stationed at the community area. Keep in mind, other than porta-potties, there are no public bathrooms or showers so it will be important for you to plan accordingly. Make sure your RV/Camper restrooms are in good working condition and you have plenty of fresh water in your water tank and your water pump works! Feel free to bring things to enjoy while you are on the ranch, like mountain bikes, fishing poles, horses, romping boots, binoculars, telescope, etc. Guests are welcome to bring their golf carts or side by side (Rangers, Mules, etc) but NO motor vehicles like 4 wheelers or dirt bikes are allowed. We ask that only licensed drivers (16 years and older) are in the driver’s seat of golf carts or side by side’s and drive responsibly for everyone’s safety. Family Friendly Activities: * Movie under the stars * Star gazing - bring your camping chairs * Fishing - BYO fishing pole * Canoeing * Hay rides * Community campfire - bring your own guitar and s’mores * Mountain/gravel biking (BYOB - bring your own bike!) on the ranch (small bike track) or on backroads around the ranch * Ranch-style games - roping, cornhole, hillbilly golf, etc - we will have some but we encourage you to bring your own games as well! * Food vendors * And possibly more (snowcones, popcorn, souvenirs, etc) Things to do around within an hour of the Bar4L: * Texas Legato Winery - less than 10 miles * Gutters and Putters in Lampasas (arcade and mini-golf) - less than 15 miles * Colorado Bend State Park - 25 miles * Hancock Golf Course - less than 15 miles * Longhorn Cavern State Park - 34 miles * Inks Lake & Inks Lake State Park (in Burnet County) - 35 miles * Lake LBJ (in Marble Falls) - 35-40 miles * Hill country bluebonnets and wildflowers - many miles of backroads with wildflowers * Reveille Peak Ranch (in Burnet) for biking, hiking, trail riding - 31 miles * Gravel Bike Ride - there are many backroads around us so if you are a cyclist, you could bring your bike. A gravel bike is probably best since these are country roads made with chip seal (soft asphalt overlaid with crushed stone aggregate) and some are even gravel roads depending on which direction you go.

The best camping near Colorado Bend State Park guide

Overview

About

Under two hours from Austin, Colorado Bend lets you experience nature and wilderness. The park is home to six miles of the Colorado River, perfect for boating, paddling, and bass fishing, along with spring-fed swimming holes and waterfalls. The 70-foot Gorman Falls, with its striking travertine formations and lush vegetation, is a highlight. There are also more than 400 caves and 35 miles of trails, including hiking trails and some of the best mountain biking in Texas. All camping areas are primitive camping, including drive-up sites, walk-in tent sites, and hike-in sites, although some include access to picnic tables, fire rings, potable water, and composting toilets.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for river access: The walk-in primitive campsites at the Colorado Bend Campground offer 28 sites for tent camping along the riverbank with a 50-yard walk-in.
  • Best for small RVs: The drive-in primitive campsites are suitable for self-contained RVs and campers up to 30 feet. There are no hookups or dump stations.
  • Best for groups with river access: The River Group Camp offers space for 48 right next to the river.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Plan to make a reservation as soon as you know your dates. Regular campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance, while the group sites can be reserved 12 months in advance.
  2. If your plans are flexible and you’d like smaller crowds, try to visit during the week, during non-holiday periods, or in winter. Those traveling light can also opt for a hike-in site.
  3. If you don’t have a reservation, arrive at the park first thing in the morning to see about grabbing any unreserved sites available for walk-ups.

When to go

Spring and summer are the busy seasons at the river and the park, which are open year-round. March through June is the best time to visit for wildflowers, while entrance roads can flood during and after heavy rains. Be sure to check the weather and road conditions before finalizing travel plans.

Know before you go

  • The gift shop rents kayaks and sells ice and firewood, but doesn’t take credit cards. Bring cash, or head to the general store just outside the park.
  • The park has no lifeguards or showers aside from a simple outdoor "wash off" shower.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the Gorman Falls trail, which can be very rocky and slippery. Do not swim, wade, climb, or fish in the Gorman Falls area, creek, or spring.
  • Fishing licenses are not required when fishing in the park.
  • Caves can only be accessed by guided cave tours, which must be reserved in advance.
  • There is limited to no cell phone coverage inside the park, but WiFi is available at the gift shop.
