Welcome to this land of rugged unspoiled beauty, where pristine vistas inspire the imagination, and an expansive ecosystem invites exploration. Covering more than 1,259,000 acres, the Dakota Prairie National Grassland is a haven for wildlife. You’ll find elk, antelope, whitetail and mule deer, bighorn sheep, coyote, grouse, prairie chicken, pheasants, wild turkeys, eagles, falcons, and the iconic prairie dog. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the grassland, as is hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and backpacking. You’re only limited by your imagination in this intriguing natural wonder of the western wilds. Rugged, rowdy, and totally right on!
