Named for the Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion National Forest is absolutely dripping with history. You could almost imagine ol’ Francis perfecting his trademark guerilla tactics in the dense pines and marshes of this area. (You can even see how you’d fare in revolutionary combat at the rifle range!) At more than 250,000 acres, there’s plenty of adventure waiting for you here. Get in touch with your inner explorer on the canoe trail that weaves through this forest or on a peaceful hike under a canopy of cypress trees. Even though there are still many of these trees looming overhead, more than a third of the forest was wiped out by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Mother Nature bounces back, though, so there’s a lot of young green growth to enjoy when you come for a visit!
