Ferns in the Forest

3 sites · Lodging, RVs32 acres · Farmington, PA
Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property in 2024. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to the beginning of October and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail.

Tent camping along the Yough river.

10 sites · RVs, Tents22 acres · Perryopolis, PA
READ BEFORE BOOKING. WE STRICTLY ENFORCE ALL RULES. YOU MUST ADHERE TO ALL RULES OR YOU WILL BE REMOVED FORM PROPERTY BY STATE POLICE. All the sites are located with in walking distance next to the famed boat rental Hazelbakers! Our sites are on or near the Yough Riverbank. Although the train runs near by a few times a day, it will hardly be noticed while you are enjoying the beauty of the area. The Allegheny Passage bike trail runs nearby across the river. You can access it using the Layton bridge that crosses the river over our property. We have a very strict no asshole policy. If you are an asshole or plan to bring an asshole with you please go camp at the KOA. Camping is not an all night or two day tailgate party, hooping it up, drinking or doing drugs all night on your weekend off with 20 of your friends. Camping at our sites should be calm and relaxing. Other campers and people in general should not have to hear you, your music, or your fun and you should not have to hear theres. We have a strict no generator rule, no guns, no fire works, no amplified or loud music and again no assholes. Your neighbor may not like your music. If you must listen to music use head phones. Please do not leave any thing at the site when leaving and leave it better than you found it. The boat rental store sales snacks, ice and bait. It does not sell wood or large water bottles. Campers should bring water. We do not have showers but do have running hot and cold water in the change rooms at the boat rental. Port-a-pottys are near by. Please use them. Do not poop in the woods and leave your shit paper laying there. That's gross.

Sleepy Hollow Campground

22 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents5 acres · Grantsville, MD
This property and farm has been in our family for 3 generations. In 1964 my grandfather started the campground due to limited camping at New Germany. My father tells stories of it being filled with guests all summer long! Over the years there was few upgrades and now it's in need of a facelift. Landscaping, electric upgrades and bathhouse remodels were completed Spring 2021. We will continue to renovate in phases it's been a labor of love, but you can still see the beauty of this rural location and enjoy the peace and quiet. Hope you enjoy your stay. Lots of trees, shade and nature. It's located near New Germany State Park, 1.5 miles by car, less than a mile by foot. The state park has a lake and hiking trails. Garrett County has so much to offer, waterfalls, lakes, hiking, skiing, Amish gifts, history, fresh air, beautiful scenery. The campground was first started in 1964 by my grandparents, we are currently completing renovations in phases.

All Ferns Most of the Time

1 site · Tent20 acres · Rockwood, PA
This spot is best for a van camp location but plenty of space for tents and hammocks. You'll find a drive-up deck if you wish to park there. Firewood is available providing you use downfalls as kindling in the stone fire pit. A 8x20' deck and picnic table are 20 feet from the fire for stargazing. When the ferns are full grown they are 3 feet tall and everywhere. A 10 minute walk takes you through a dense pine forest with large rock formations and a nice creek with many gurgling fall areas. If there looks like a cave amongst the large rocks, then it probably is a bear den. There is a lot to do near by. Some note worthy locations : Cranberry Glade Lake (good for kayaking or fishing), Ohiopyle, 7 Springs, Fallingwater, Living Treasures, Caddie Shak, and Hidden Valley are all about 25 minutes away. This property also borders Laurel Ridge State Park. There is a Dollar General and a gas station about 15 minutes away for convenience needs.

Highlands Homestead Private Suite

1 site · Lodging15 acres · Confluence, PA
Highlands Homestead, located a mile south of Confluence, PA, offers a ground-level, one-bedroom retreat (an optional second bed is available if needed) with a private, separate entrance from the main house. In the hottest time of summer, the apartment stays comfy and cool. Parking is conveniently located beside the house. Our 15 acres include woodlands, fields, and ponds, which our guests are welcome to enjoy. Confluence, our pleasant small town, has several restaurants, a charming antique shop, a grocery store, a gas station, a kayak/rafting outfitter, banks, and a bicycle shop. Local opportunities for outdoor recreation and education abound in this area: The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP trail), a tremendously popular hiking and biking trail from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., passes our side of Confluence along the Youghiogheny River (commonly referred to as the Yough). We offer complimentary shuttle service to and from the trail in Confluence. The Yough river attracts thousands of adventure-seeking kayakers, rafters, canoers, and fishing enthusiasts every year. Individuals with skill levels from 0 to expert can enjoy different parts of the river for boating fun. You can join a guided raft tour or boat on your own. Our Highlands Homestead is close to the Ramcat put-in point, which is suitable for those less experienced boaters. We have canoed this stretch, the Middle Yough, and it is minimally challenging with beautiful scenery through pristine forest. Guided raft tours run daily throughout the season. The dam of Yough Lake is situated within easy walking distance to Confluence, and its outflow continues the Yough River's path to where it joins the Monongahela. Yough Lake swimming area is located above the dam, with a sandy beach and picnic tables along the edge of the forest. The lake has motorized boat access and is a popular choice for party barge rentals. We're within a very few miles of Ohiopyle State Park, a gorgeous and verdant forest with hiking trails, streams, waterfalls, and a charming town with numerous gift shops, restaurants, and pubs. Guided rafting tours run daily on this more challenging stretch of the Yough starting in Ohiopyle, but experienced boaters may also navigate the rapids on their own. The Laurel Highlands hiking trail is accessible in Ohiopyle. This trail is a 70-mile, continuous footpath stretching atop the Laurel Ridge. It winds from Ohiopyle to Rt. 56, between Seward and Johnstown, PA. The trail affords some great views of the twisting Yough River, from high above Ohiopyle State Park, to the beautiful Conemaugh Valley, near Johnstown, PA. Fallingwater, a fabulous and unique Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just beyond Ohiopyle and is open for tours, as well as another of his masterpiece designs, Kentuck Knob. Fort Necessity, the site of George Washington's first battle experience and the start of the French and Indian War, is located on Route 40 in Farmington, an easy drive from Confluence. Guided tours help teach visitors about the early skirmishes that helped in settling southwestern Pennsylvania.

The best camping near Ohiopyle State Park guide

Overview

About

With 20,500 acres of rugged woodlands, waterfalls, and rambling rivers on the southern cusp of the Laurel Highlands—Ohiopyle State Park is bursting with outdoor adventures. The Youghiogheny River Gorge has some of the busiest whitewater rafting runs east of the Mississippi with class III and IV rapids. Hiking trails total 79 miles, including the 27-mile multi-use Youghiogheny River Trail, shared by bikers and cross-country skiers. Need more options? How about rock climbing, horseback riding, sledding, or snowmobiling? Seasonal camping is available at the Kentuck Campground, which also has camping cottages, yurts, and 27 walk-in, tent-only sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve one of 207 campsites, six cottages, and four yurts via the Pennsylvania State Parks website.
  2. Campsite reservations open 11 months in advance; cottages and yurts must be reserved a minimum of three days in advance.
  3. Campsites can book up fast, especially if visiting during peak season (June to September) or on holiday weekends. Aim to book at least three months in advance; more for cottages and yurts.

When to go

Millions of visitors come to Ohiopyle State Park each year, and crowds are inevitable at popular trails and viewpoints—avoid summer and holiday weekends if you want to dodge the masses. Camping is seasonal at Ohiopyle, and Kentuck Campground opens from April through mid-December. The main whitewater rafting season is April to October, but the falls are only open when the area is staffed, so check dates in advance.
