Camp Skipping Rock on Pine Creek

1 site · RV, Tent5 acres · Cammal, PA
Welcome to our little slice of heaven along Pine Creek at the southern end of the "PA Grand Canyon". It is an outdoor lover's dream. The camp lies inside of Tiadaghton State Forest on the west side of Pine Creek in the Pennsylvania Wilds. The property is 5 acres, embedded deep in public land. On the property there is this one very large campsite (approx 100 square ft) for rent and our small cabin. If we are there at the same time as our guests, we share the outhouse and shower, but our guests have their own private picnic table, fire pit and grill on the far side of the property. The area is beautiful for paddling, floating, fishing, hiking, biking, rock skipping, dipping your toes, swimming hole gems, searching for waterfalls, writing retreats. There are hundreds of miles of hiking, mountain bike and ATV trails, and some of the best fishing and stargazing on the East Coast. There is a 62 mile -rails-to-trails that runs along the other side of Pine Creek from Wellsboro to Jersey Shore, PA. Our camp is located on a secluded hill - a relaxing oasis removed from the rest of the world - read a book in a hammock, build campfires, grill yummy food, let the kids run around like crazy, play a lot of cards. It a 2 minute walk from the property to public access to Pine Creek. It is a 45 minute drive to paddle the Western Branch of the Susquehanna near Lock Haven, PA.

Austin Dam Memorial Park

206 sites · RVs, Tents76 acres · PA
Just outside the quaint town of Austin sits a vivid reminder of one of Pennsylvania's worst disasters – the Austin Flood. In 1909, the dam was constructed on Freeman Run to power the Bayless Papermill downstream. Many wondered if the dam was safe. On September 30, 1911, Austin found out. Poor construction, coupled with torrential rain, resulted in the dam's collapse. Nearly 400 million gallons of water were released, destroying everything for 8 miles. At least 78 people perished in the tragedy. It was the second worst flood disaster in Pennsylvania's history and sixth worst dam failure in U.S. history. The tragedy sparked new legislation to improve dam safety, and the Austin Dam was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The ruins of the dam still stand, surrounded by a 76-acre park, as a tribute to the lives lost in the Austin Flood. Don't miss one of Potter County's best kept secrets!

The best camping near Hyner Run State Park guide

Overview

About

Echoed by the stream-movements that permeate the network of cave systems, Hyner Run State Park is a cavernous oasis, well-hidden in the surround vegetation of Sproul State Forest. And did we mention that Sproul State Forest is Pennsylvania's most expansive forest? Because it is, two-hundred and eighty-thousand acres of it. Aside from the area’s canopy-savvy trees, Hyner Run State Park is teeming with handicap accessible, modern campsites; most of these sites include sewage and trailer hook-ups as well, all situated within the vicinity of well-manicured hiking trails. Take a leisurely weekend away from the colonial concrete jungle, lace-up your hiking boots, and spool your fishing reel. Hyner Run State Park will be more than happy to facilitate some solid maternal bonding time with Mother Nature.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Hyner Run State Park is during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall, when the park's full splendor is on display. Winter can be harsh, with snow limiting access to certain areas, making it less ideal for visits.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Be aware of park hours, typically from sunrise to sunset, and plan your activities accordingly.
  • Remember to pack out all trash and leave the park as pristine as you found it.
  • Stay on designated trails to protect the park's natural habitats and your own safety.
