Powder Creek Ranch was homesteaded by the Browning family, from Missouri, in 1882. They lived off the land, hunting deer, fishing, farming, and a small dairy. Several generations of Browning's called the Ranch home until 1974 when my grandparents, Hillard and Bernie Hanson bought it. Bernie was raised in the Oregon Coast mountains on a place very much like Powder Creek Ranch and it reminded her of her childhood home. She loved to fish and bird watch and feed the deer in the backyard. Soon after purchasing the Ranch, Hillard built the two ponds that are now the viewpoint from the house. Bernie stocked them with a special trout and supplied trout feed to all the kids that visited. Also, she would put corn out to entice the deer and ducks and soon had a flock on the ponds. Grammie Bernie would invite people all the time, even strangers to come to the Ranch and enjoy this special place.
In the spirit of my grandparents, we still feed the ducks and deer and love to share our beautiful Ranch with others. It is truly a memorable experience!
