Sorry - this wasn't the ideal trip
I'll admit this is long-winded. I really hate leaving reviews when they aren't positive, but I just think it's important people know what they are actually getting. First the good - let me start by saying that my family and I had a lot of fun. Camping is a great get-away and we had a great time outdoors. The campsite areas are large and separated enough from others that, while you know you have neighbors, you aren't bothered by anyone. It's too bad everyone doesn't understand camping and trail etiquette, but that's for another review. It's also really close to Newport so we took a half-day trip there to walk around, get lunch, etc.
So here are my issues. First, you park and walk through a pasture to get to the gate and bridge to take you over the creek to the sites. This is an active cow pasture, so watch for poop, etc. as you unload your gear. This is also where the potable water source is located. You can use a hose to fill up your water containers. Just be careful as this hose is sitting on the ground in this same active cow pasture, so you never know what kind of bacteria is on the end of it before you get your water. As you go through the gate and over the bridge, the creek is cute, but there's an old tire (??) sitting in the water just below. Back to the bacteria concern - keep in mind that if there has been a recent rain, that cow pasture and goat pen are both right up against it and both run-off into the creek. Right at the swimming hole area. Just sayin'. Also, the "beach" area carved out for the creek is small and can only be accessed near the bridge. The listing makes it sound like the campsites run along the creek. Not so.
The pictures show large areas under trees with room to hang hammocks and spread out. Since the detail pictures they use were taken a while ago, the blackberry bushes have seriously taken over and all the areas where you could potentially hang a hammock were overgrown now. That said, we had room for our tent under the trees. Just not anything else. People mention the train here too. That usually rolls through most nights around 2:30am or so. Its really loud, but usually short. Our tent site (#2 maybe?) was about 20-25 feet from the tracks.
Porta-potties. Here's the rub on that - it's nasty. There were greasy spots on the floor of it when we arrived. And it got worse as we were there (3 nights) with other campers. There are actually 2, but equally bad. Multiple active small spider nests in both of them. While I recognize that people put these out here for campers' convenience, it's also so people don't dig cat-holes and poop all over their property. At other camp spaces, the owners upkeep & clean them regularly. No greasy puddles on the floor, no active spider nests, etc. Also - you have to go all the way around back to the main parking area to get to the porta-potties. Not a big deal, just keep that in mind if anyone has an "emergency."
Noise. Aside from the train, we were woken up at 11:30 PM at night by barking dogs (they keep a small outdoor kennel across the creek for their dogs and a couple of them are the small-barker type.) Dogs barking at 7:30 in the morning. Kids yelling at dogs (Yoda and Charlie maybe?) also at 7:30 am. When leaving, one of them was nipping my heels and barking as we tried to get the cars out of the main gate. Also - Music. From the main house. Until almost 10:30 on Friday night. And Music Again. At 8:00 on Saturday morning. Really? If I'm paying to camp somewhere, I don't want to hear music. I want quiet. Sorry.
Firewood. The site and app both show it as an add-on and as available. We only bought one bundle at check-out planning to add more later based on weather. I reached out to Nancy a couple of days before the trip asking about adding more firewood and was told they were running low and I needed to bring my own. That's a lot of wood for 3 nights. That's fine and we did it, but just keep that in mind if you're needing wood for your trip.
I noticed that they have recently raised their prices. A site for 4 people is the same price as a motel at this point. If getting outdoors is all that's important to you, then this might work for you. If you're looking for solitude, quiet, and a feeling that you're really away from things, this might not be your thing.
