Overview

About

Looking for something different for your next outdoor getaway? Check out the very unique Great Salt Plains State Park where you can spend time on the salt crust of a prehistoric sea bed! This park has lots to do besides exploring salt. There is a lake for boating, fishing, and watching migratory birds (like pelicans!), as well as a trail network for hiking and horseback riding. In the adjacent Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge there is a seasonal crystal dig area where you can hunt for hourglass shaped selenite crystals under the salt crust. It is the only place in the world to find this type of crystal. Best camping souvenir ever! Since you may get addicted to this crystal digging, why not spend a few nights at one of the park’s many campsites or splurge on one of the newly renovated, eco-friendly cabins. This area is a real gem!

Notable campgrounds

  • Nathan Boone Equestrian Camp: Offers sites with corrals for horse enthusiasts and direct trail access.
  • George Sibley Equestrian Area: Provides a more primitive camping experience for equestrian visitors.
  • Lakefront RV & Tent Sites: Enjoy stunning views and easy lake access for fishing and boating.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak seasons, to ensure your spot amid the park's natural beauty.
  • Consider mid-week stays for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations to snag a last-minute reservation.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park's campgrounds are fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Great Salt Plains State Park is from April to October, when the crystal digging area is open and the weather is favorable for outdoor activities.
