The area that is level and drivable can be used. Overview

About

When you hear the word “facilities,” does it immediately make you think “Nah, that’s not where I wanna camp”? If so, then H.R. Morgan State Nature Preserve is totally your jam. Camping is allowed all over (except where prohibited, naturally), and you won’t find many amenities out here—just some solid time with nature. The Sheyenne River winds through a pristine mature forest, creating wetlands that are home to tons of plants and animals, some of them pretty darn rare. But it’s not all about wetlands, because this is also where the sandhills meet the river delta, so the landscape variety is on point. This place almost looks like it belongs in the Midwest, but make no mistake, this is pure North Dakota!

When to go

The best time to visit H.R. Morgan State Nature Preserve is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warmth and an abundance of wildlife, but also the possibility of crowds. Winter can be harsh, with heavy snow and cold temperatures, making some areas less accessible.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast and dress appropriately for the season to ensure a comfortable visit.
  • Be aware of local wildlife and practice safe viewing distances.
  • Some areas may have limited accessibility, so plan your route in advance.
  • Remember to carry out all trash and leave no trace to preserve the park's natural beauty.
  • Visit the official website or contact the park's visitor center for the latest information on closures and conditions.
