It’s not hard to spot Grandfather Mountain; the thing sticks up nearly a vertical mile over the Piedmont plateau! For centuries people have stood in awe of this monolith, many have even summited it. The mountain is one of the most special places in the east. With over 70 species of rare or endangered plants and animals, it has been designated as a United Nations International Biosphere Reserve.

If you’ve come here to hike, you better be serious, because climbing the slopes of this mountain is no walk in the park. Some of the trails require you to climb ladders up the cliffs. Sounds fun actually. Just be wary of the sky, because this area is known for some of the South’s most severe weather. The State Park itself is actually a very new addition, and is commonly referred to as the mountain’s “backcountry.” Be ready to bring your adventurer’s spirit!
