Why be Square?! Blue Ridge Yurt

2 sites ¡ Lodging1 acres ¡ Pilot, VA
Blue Ridge Yurts is a woman-owned company in Floyd, Virginia, started by my mother, Sharon. We were staying at Treebones, a yurt 'glampground' in Big Sur, California, and fell in love with yurts together. My mom said, "I think I could build one of these," and the company was born! She does all the woodworking, using sustainable practices, with locally-sourced wood, and her best friend Kathy does the fabric end of things. I was one of her early guinea pigs, and love my yurt property dearly <3 This 24' yurt sits on a beautiful private acreage off an end-state maintenance road, with biking and hiking trails just a 20 minute drive from the touristy town of Floyd, Virginia. There's a steam shower sauna, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a deck overlooking the mountains with a table and seating. Enjoy!

100 Acre Wood

3 sites ¡ RVs, Tents101 acres ¡ Draper, VA
100 Acres of forested land with scattered clearings that are connected by various roads/trails throughout. Over the years cutting roads has been a hobby that has resulted in miles of cleared pathways throughout the property that are perfect for hiking, running, cycling and ATV’s. The property includes a stream, several ravines, ridge lines and trails to explore. We frequently encounter deer, and see the occasional turkey, bear, and Bigfoot. We are new to hosting campers and are happy to help make accommodations to help you have an enjoyable stay. We only allow 3 groups at a time on the property to ensure that all guests continue to feel complete privacy from others. Things to watch out for other than the wildlife mentioned above the two main concerns in this part of Virginia are deer ticks and poison ivy.

Peaceful easy feeling

A very peaceful place to get away from the hectic city life and enjoy nature. Children and pet friendly. Build a campfire under the stars and relax.  Large camping site and beautiful mountain views.  Acres of trails great for biking and hiking. Also a pond for catch and release fishing. This is private property, so it is not what you would expect from a "camp ground". The site is very secluded and private. If you are looking for quiet, this is your place! We are within an hour of Pipestem State Park. Other sites in driving distance are the New River Gorge, Babcock State Park, and Winterplace. We will greet you at check in and guide you to the camp site. Also, all of your firewood is included! You will want to bring ‘starter logs’.

Savage Acres on Craig Creek

6 sites ¡ RVs, Tents120 acres ¡ New Castle, VA
In a remote valley, along the banks of Craig's Creek, just north of Roanoke VA, the property includes mature hardwood forest, pasture, and an 1830s log cabin where we live. We love to share this special place with visitors, and have some basic amenities for campers. The campsites are at the edge of a large pasture and just a few steps from Craig Creek and our big swimmin' hole. Totally secluded in a remote valley - no houses or roads in sight (but our cabin is a short walk through the woods if you need something), no cell service for most providers, but within a short drive of Roanoke and Blacksburg, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities.

Periwinkle Branch Family Farm

10 sites ¡ RVs, Tents68 acres ¡ Max Meadows, VA
Learn more about this land:Nestled between Virginia Tech University (Blacksburg, VA) and Bristol Motor Speedway is a historical family farm 15 minutes from route 81. New River Trail State Park is 3.5 miles from the family farm, so bring the kayaks and canoes and enjoy the New River and the surrounding area of Southwest Virginia! As you turn off of the county road (607) you will find yourself at the classic red farm gate of Periwinkle Branch Family Farm. This Southwest Virginia farm was once an iron mining farm. During your private stay, you will find old historical farming equipment hidden amongst the landscape and even old mining buildings ("rock huts" now toppled over but once was part of the operation...see if you can find them!) The neighbors and family have between 30-50 Black Angus cows that you will see grazing the 30 acres of rolling pasture. You may camp wherever you like! I recommend on the hill behind the 100-year-old farmhouse, right before the 30 acres of wooded hiking, or by the spring house. You will see turkeys, deer, and other amazing creatures as you walk the pasture and woods. Follow the natural spring up the mountain and try to catch a glimpse of Perwinkle Mountain and the beautiful landscape of Southwest Virginia.

The best camping near Blue Ridge National Heritage Area guide

Overview

About

The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina harbor a rich heritage and culture. First, there was the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans. Then, European settlers came to the area. These mountains and foothills continue to have living traditions of craft, music, and agriculture.

Take a scenic drive through the 25 counties in this heritage corridor. Explore quaint towns and rustic shops. Check out the towns of Rockford, Saluda, Tryon, and Dillsboro.

Hiking and nature walks are everywhere. More than 80 miles of the Appalachian Trail goes through the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Elk Knob State Park features a 1.9-mile trail that reaches the summit. The panoramic views are spectacular and well worth the walk. Chimney Rock Park also has fantastic views. Areas of Chimney Rock may look familiar to fans of the movie "The Last of the Mohicans." Panthertown Valley is referred to as the Yosemite of the East, and with good reason. The waterfalls, deep woods, and rock formations offer a wide range of natural beauty.

Cultural tours put you in touch with the living traditions of the Blue Ridge. Haywood Quilt Trails showcase the beautiful art of quilting. Take a Toe River Studio Tour to see where local artists perfect their crafts. Music trails take you from one local music hall to the next. On any given weekend, you can find several opportunities to listen to live bluegrass.

There are tons of campsites in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Find one that offers a short walk to beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Summer is a great time for touring. Consider autumn for a getaway, because fall foliage in the Blue Ridge forms a natural canvas like none other.
