Sterling Pond

1 site · LodgingParishville, NY
The camp was first built in 1905 by Dr. Goldsmith and family. The doctor and his family used the camp for summer vacations. During the winter the camp was rented out as winter hotel for loggers. Ice was harvested from the pond and stored in what is now one of the cabins. When our family bought the place, the hotel was falling down and the buildings were in disrepair. Geoffrey, the family caretaker, has spent the last few years cleaning up the site. All that remains now of the hotel is the chimney while the ice house and caretaker's cabin have been improved and are now ready for visitors. With 840 ft of pond frontage and 4.4 acres you can pitch a tent on the banks of the pond, up in the woods, or stay in one of the two cabins on site -- all are included in the cost of booking! Swimming and boating in the pond is obligatory. Year round fishing has long been a tradition. The spring fed pond is home to large and small mouth bass, northern pike, crappy, and blue gills. There are a number of ponds and state lands nearby. Accommodations include two outhouses and two docks so no waiting. There is a canoe and rowboat available and life jackets. The camp is car accessible three seasons and snowshoe accessible in the winter.  There are summer cottages across the pond but not much happening on our side. Cedar Lodge, the nearest bar/restaurant, is about 5 minutes away and very popular all year round. The closest gas station and convenience store is about 20 minutes in the village of Parishville.

Forest & Farm Retreats at Wildwood Hills

3 sites · Tents156 acres · Colton, NY
Here you will be on over 150 acres of private land with hiking trails which meander through beautiful forests full of wildlife, lovely ferns and rare flowers. Natural sights our wonderful land here offers include tumbling streams, sheer rock ledges, beaver ponds where you may see the beavers or wild ducks or geese who nest there, and in the farther back “bear country” you might be lucky enough to get a peek of the resident flying squirrels! You can hike the hills and rocky ridges of the Cobbles and see the Adirondack foothills, a brilliant sunset or sunrise for the earlybirds. You can take our hiking trails to 1000s acres Public Land that borders our property and follow the trails there to Stone Valley and the Raquette River in Colton. This makes for miles of trails! The Raquette River Blue Corridor is known for hiking trails that follow the river and for excellent white-water kayaking opportunities at Stone Valley. Colton, NY has townwide treatments for Blackflies. It is a natural biocontrol method that uses another organism (BTi) to kill only Blackfly larvae in waterways. It really works! We only ever get a few (literally) Blackflies between routine treatments if it is a bad season. During your stay here you will not have the usual clouds of Blackflies hovering around your head! But you will still see amazing numbers of dragonflies! We work a small organic farm at the front of our land where we grow vegetables and herbs, raise pigs and lots of birds- chickens, guinea hens, ducks and geese. You can view the field of our young orchard and vineyard with its wildflowers and butterflies as you park and head back into the woods. Many times our twin horses will be pastured in this field as well. Stop by the farmstand for our current seasonal offerings and to check out its gorgeous timber-frame construction lovingly hand-crafted by Derrick from timbers sawn and cut from our forests and pegged together with antique carved oak pegs. If you are interested in learning more on a tour of our sawmill, gardens, animals, and other farm operations, we encourage you to contact us to schedule one during your stay. We offer the services of our canoes for 1-4 people, message us if you would like us to paddle with you out on the nearby river or some very special bog ponds. Derrick has led offroad bike rides on little known trails in the area and welcomes inquiries from any dual-sport/dirtbike riders, singly or groups. We love to teach folks a little of what we have learned on the farm, in the woods and in our studies, but first we need to arrange for the free time, so let us know if interested in hearing about building portable pig huts with living roofs, timber framing the old way, forestry and woodcraft, our menagerie, and other efforts to make the dream of sustainable living a reality. At WildWood Hills Farm and Retreats, we are diversity inclusive and strive to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for all. We respect all our guests and expect them to respect each other, us and the Land in kind. Go in Nature! ~ E & D

Quiet country living

Located adjacent to our horse farm, Hipcampers are welcome to hike on our trails. We offer horse back riding and carriage driving lessons. Conveniently located between the St Lawrence Seaway and the foothill Adirondacks there are lots or opportunities for outdoor recreation. There are plenty of hikes for all abilities and duration. If paddling is more your thing our county has 3 of the 10 longest rivers in NYS along with lakes and reservoirs. There are also nearby mountain bike trails, and we are not far from the St Lawrence County Multi Use Trail. While there are many interesting and interactive destinations close by, larger cultural destinations such as Ottawa or Montreal make great day trips.

Our property was purchased and farmed by my ancestors in 1803. They cleared the meadow area of trees and rocks and established the stone wall, enclosing the area. Native people also camped, hunted and trapped here in the early 1800s.Learn more about this land:Relax in a secluded meadow, wander through old Hemlock forest trails and watch many varieties of birds and other wildlife on 60 acres of wetland preserve. May Meadows Farm

3 sites · Tents120 acres · De Kalb Junction, NY
Located in a hay meadow that is farmed 2 to 3 times a year to provide food for our animals. Next to the meadow is a mix of maple and pine trees. In the spring we use the maple trees for maple syrup production. Learn more about this land:This site is close to the road but easy to access. It is located where there was once an old stone barn, and all that is left is the stone foundation. Set around shrubbery trees, with two big maples at the parking spot to provide shade and coverage. You look out to an open hay meadow. That abuts our maple sugar stand with a mix of pine trees in the woods. You will be able to watch lots of deer frolic and play in the meadow and hear the sounds of the wildlife and birds around the woods. You may hear the occasional horse-drawn carriage as our neighbors are Amish and utilize the road frequently. In the distance, you might hear a stray moo as we have three farms on the road that are home to a variety of cows.On the campsite, you are more than welcome to bring a pet and let them safely roam around the field, or take a walk around yourself. Mt Baker Tiny Cabin

1 site · Lodging3 acres · Saranac Lake, NY
This off-the-grid tiny house is nestled on a 23 acre parcel at the end of a quarter-mile dirt road. The property itself is secluded but is less than 2 miles from the heart of Saranac Lake's downtown. This property is bordered by the Saranac River, the backside of Baker Mountain and State Forest. The only other building on the property is our timberframe which we may or may not be at during the time of your visit. The property does have private trails up to the cliffs on the backside of Baker mtn however, the Saranac River is down a steep embankment so it does not make for a good place to launch a boat (several public boat launches nearby). The Mt Baker tiny house is a great basecamp for hiking the Saranac Lake 6-ers, paddling/boating along the Saranac Chain of lakes or Saranac River, Mountain Biking at Dewey, Pisgah or other nearby BETA trails. IMPORTANT DETAILS: This tiny cabin is completely off the grid: no electricity, heat or cooling. Queen sized bed - we provide the linens. The driveway is narrow - so nothing in tow. The best camping near Higley Flow State Park guide

Overview

About

You don't have to be an interpretive dancer (though it's probably recommended) to understand the helpful interpretive signs that describe the six distinct habitats through which the Beaver Pond Nature Trail passes at Higley Flow State Park. Despite the otherwise heavily-wooded and hilly terrain, there is a sandy beach for swimming and plenty of leveled campsites so you won't roll your own little dam down stream. Take advantage of the many amenities this camp has to offer, even for winter visitors (ice fishing, anyone?), but be aware that they do allow hunting during certain peak seasons so be sure to check the calendar and throw the oranges in tow!
