Washington Crossing State Park
Way back on Christmas Day in 1776, the struggling Continental Army followed their fearless leader (some George Washington fellow) through the freezing Delaware River, and then marched up the road to Trenton and defeated the Hessians. While we’re not sure we’d recommend forging the Delaware in a Jersey winter for fun, Washington Crossing Park itself is a tranquil escape in the Garden state.
Hike amongst the Revolutionary ghosts—many historic buildings are still open to visitors—and learn about the park’s modern life with its 140-acre interpretative trail. During the summer, a local theatre group performs in the amphitheater, and on Christmas, you can catch an authentic re-enactment of the infamous attack. And, don’t worry, history buffs aren’t the only winners here—science nerds can check out the observatory and many nature progra
