Sweet Song Acres

4 sites ¡ RVs, Tents100 acres ¡ NH
Sweet Song Acres is 100+ acres of secluded forest nestled along the Little Sugar River, at the base of Perry Mountain. Located in rural Unity, NH and Charlestown, NH, just across the Vermont state line. Southernmost point, located in Charlestown is one of two campsites. The other is Shady Grove, located in Unity. The two sites, located in bordering towns share the same entrance and are connected by a 1/4 mile trail. Both are very large sites. Campers would drive to both sites down a trail so we highly recommend a vehicle with decent clearance and 4WD or AWD. Southernmost Point is a fully drive-in site. Shady Grove campers park above the site and the campsite is down a short path, just a few hundred feet or so. The property consists of varied terrain of rock ledges, lush moss, streams, and panoramic views at the summit. There are many options of local outdoor activities in the area or if you prefer, just sit and "listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock your soul".

Quarry Brook

4 sites ¡ Lodging, Tents100 acres ¡ Putney, VT
It all started on a first date in Boston....Nick had to excuse himself to take a phone call. His cow had fled its pasture. Much to Tara's surprise in that moment, this man she had just met was finishing his engineering degree at Northeastern, but was simultaneously building a homestead in Vermont. Fast forward 7 years, and here we are, building the life we only dreamed of. We yearned for simplicity. Deeper connections to our surroundings and mother nature. A calmer sense of place. The satisfaction that comes from growing food. Creating with our hands. We're a working farm and homestead. Every day at Quarry Brook is a new adventure, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re incredibly excited to share our little corner of southern Vermont and what we’re up to with you!

The best camping near Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site guide

Overview

About

Statues of this renowned American sculptor haunt his former home. Lincoln rises to greet you in the yard. Inside, the stern Puritan holds court. Named Aspet, the New Hampshire residence was also a Cornish Arts Colony, whose ranks included Maxfield Parrish and Isadora Duncan.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens arrived at the Federal house in 1885. The artist was at a pivotal career moment. The City of Chicago had commissioned him to create a sculpture of Lincoln. A friend offered his summer home for rent, promising that the Granite State had many “Lincoln-shaped” men to use as models. Saint-Gaudens bought the property six years later. Many of his artist friends were already in residence. The painter George de Forest Brush lived in a tepee in the yard. Others built studios nearby, including Henry O. Walker and Maxfield Parrish.

Aspet became a memorial after the death of Mrs. Saint-Gaudens. Today, the National Parks Service manages the home, studios, and gardens. The property houses 100 of his works, both originals, and reproductions. Even visitors not acquainted with Saint-Gaudens are likely to recognize a few. His Adams Memorial is here, also on display in Washington, D.C. A cast of Diana notches her arrow in the garden. Her identical sister is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Smaller works are here, too. Saint-Gaudens dabbled in medallions as a fun distraction. Several of his coins were minted. Collectors esteem his Eagle and Double Eagle as the most beautiful of all American coins.

The national historic site is open from mid-May through November. Call ahead during the off-season, as some areas close. Surprisingly, the residence is among the least visited parks in the country. That only leaves more breathing room to appreciate the work.
