Overview

About

Up near the borders of Canada and North Dakota, Old Mill State Park isn’t as isolated from civilization as you might expect. While you will see deer, moose, jackrabbits, beavers, and owls everywhere, civilization isn't a lifetime away. Nearby the towns of Argyle and Stephen are home to plenty of restaurants, shops, and even a hockey rink.

A swinging suspension bridge connects the campsites to an ancient beach on glacial Lake Agassiz, or you'll find primo snowshoeing during the winter months. If you can, try to plan your stay around the park’s annual running of the old mill—named for the steam-powered flour mill operated by the Larson family here in 1882. Swing by during the event to see the historic grist mill running (once a year!) as part of their special event programming.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book your campsite well in advance to secure your spot amid the park's natural beauty.
  • Consider visiting during the weekdays for better availability and a quieter camping experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations to snag a last-minute reservation at this popular destination.
  • Explore nearby camping options to ensure you have a backup plan in case the park is fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Old Mill State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer offers warm days perfect for water activities, though it can be busy. Winters are quiet but can be harsh, so check local conditions.

  • For a smooth check-in, proceed directly to your campsite upon arrival; park staff will assist you there.
  • Be prepared for a rustic camping experience, as amenities may be limited in certain areas of the park.
