Petersburg is a small town in central Illinois, just a short drive from the capital of Springfield. Our area has a great history, but the primary figure we are famous for is Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic site is just across the river from our farm; about 2 miles by road. He likely rode his horse right through our woodlands as he traveled from town to town.
For many years, this farm was part of a several-thousand acre cattle ranch. Somehow, while other parts of the ranch sold off into smaller residential parcels, we are one of the few that remained larger and weren’t clear-cut for construction. This is due, in part, to our steep hills, creeks, and ravines, making conventional farming impossible on this land. Of course, those same challenges made it perfect for a sustainable, permaculture farm like Red Gate
