Chicagoans are spoiled with world-class museums, mouth-watering deep dish pizza and a spectacular skyscraper skyline. But sometimes an escape from the concrete jungle is necessary. So if you need to hit that nature reset button, you're in luck! Rent some gear, then just a quick one hour drive can get you to Wisconsin, Indiana, rural Illinois or Michigan, with endless camping possibilities. Want to feel sand between your toes? Campers can pitch a tent at Indiana Dunes State Park where water activities such as boating, fishing and jet skiing are plentiful. Or try your hand at bird watching with a quick drive inland towards Starved Rock State Park. In just a short hike you'll be enjoying picturesque waterfalls and canyons with eagles soaring above. Or travel up north towards Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park, home to the only remaining beach ridge shoreline in the state. Chicago bike enthusiasts will be delighted to know the park is accessible via the North Shore Channel Trail. And glampers will rejoice when they find nearby cabins and farm camping with easy access to Lake Michigan. See why camping near Chicago is just as thrilling as being in the city!

The lodging quarters of the retreat center. Four large rooms and four shared bathrooms.
The Landing is bordered by the Kankakee River. The river was peaceful and great for bird watching. We also saw evidence of lots of other wildlife.
We camped out on air mattresses in one of the four well-heated sleeping rooms. Plenty of space and nice and bright. Stephen said they'll soon be filled with bunks and hammocks for sleeping.
We collected wood from near the trails to build our fire.
Enjoying the last of the day's sunlight as we built our fire for dinner on the shared patio space.

Our permaculture designed 1/2 acre pond and central barn made from shipping containers are two of our key features. Fresh drinking water and electricity are found at the barn, just a short walk from the camping areas.
Jim Penrod is our site manager, permaculturist, teacher and farmer at Bending Oak. He will be your host. If you have any questions he is very knowledgeable and happy to share. If you wish to be left alone, he totally gets that too. You are in great hands.
Here is a close-up look at the barn. Notice the 20' shipping containers that make up the walls and structure. Add trellises and some roofing and you've got a barn.
Waking up to this.
