Taste of Old Florida

12 sites · RVs, Tents10 acres · Palm City, FL
A small but unique piece of land that was given to a family in the 1920s by the Florida Railroad Company. It stayed in the family until we purchased it. It is unique because the surrounding area does not have much tree coverage. This is due to the ground underneath, which is a vein of grey marl. This is why the area is called the Allapattah (an Indian word for Alligator) Flats. We are hoping that our county stays the way it is so people will know what Old Florida really looks like. Minutes from I-95, but surrounded by the Allapattah Flats Wildlife Management Preserve. Located on Martin Hwy, which was recently designated as a Florida Scenic Hwy. Fifteen minutes to Stuart and thirty minutes to West Palm Beach, a world away from the hustle and bustle. We realize that people also love Florida for Disney and tropical paradises but if that is what you want than this may not be your kind of place.

The best camping near Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park guide

Overview

About

Toto, we’re not in Florida anymore. Okay, technically we are, but spend a day in this state park and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the wide, grassy prairies of the midwest. Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is home to one of the largest stretches of dry prairie in Florida. Hike, bike, or trot (via horseback) through the hundreds of miles of dirt trails to explore this unique natural setting. Take in the sweet scent of whimsically named wildflowers like Bachelor’s Buttons and Blazing Star, and see if you can spot a Burrowing Owl or the endangered Grasshopper Sparrow hopping among the tall grass. If you’re really gunning for a “Little House on the Prairie” moment, then join a ranger for a buggy tour. Perched in a seat high above the prairie, you’ll be privy to some spectacular views. Plus, the remoteness of this park makes for some awesome stargazing. So at the end of the day sit back and search the stars, content that you found a new slice of Old Florida.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is during the cooler months from November to March. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the park's full splendor is on display. Summer months can be challenging with high temperatures and increased mosquito activity, making spring and fall the sweet spots for exploration.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast and prepare for Florida's dynamic climate before your visit.
  • Ensure you have all necessary permits and are aware of park rules & regulations.
  • Accessibility options are available; inquire ahead for specific needs.
  • Stay informed about any park closures or alerts that may affect your trip.
  • Facilities such as restrooms and picnic areas are provided, but always pack out your trash.
