Self-contained glamping pods in the Lake District's beautiful Lyth Valley

In a national park not short of spectacular scenery, the little-known Lyth Valley is quite the place to discover. It lies between Kendal and Windermere, between the town that’s touted as ‘the gateway to The Lakes’ and the place most people want to go. And yet it’s not a busy spot: all rolling hills, sheep-scattered fields and fruit trees. In April, it’s full of blossom and by September damsons are falling from the trees. Some of them in Crosthwaite, a traditional place with a pretty church, a local inn that once doubled as a blacksmiths and a village school. In days gone by, you might have seen the local farmer’s children here selling damsons from their orchard up the lane. Those kids have long since grown up and instead of sharing fruit, they’re now sharing Damson View instead.

The orchard may be old but the trees here are young, having been planted recently to rejuvenate the place. The other new arrivals are the glamping pods; little timber cabins which are perfect for two. They offer everything you’d expect from a self-catering cottage in miniature: a made-up double bed, a bathroom with towels and toiletries, a kitchenette, sofa, dining table and TV. Outside there’s seating, a fire pit and views of the village and the hills beyond. It’s these limestone uplands, Cartmel and Whitbarrow Scar, which help shelter the valley and give it a mild and sunny microclimate. It’s right for growing juicy fruit and great for glampers too as the west-facing huts are bathed in sun (when it shines) until it dips below the hills.

With such a view and a location in England’s biggest national park, it’s no surprise that the walking, cycling and outdoor activity is world class. And it starts right on site with the family farm’s private fell rising up behind the pods. Climb it to see the cairn created by village kids and views that stretch all the way to Blackpool Tower (on a clear day). Head up nearby Gummer’s How for views of Windermere or make your way to the shores of the lake for a cruise. The Lyth Valley and Damson View pods present one of the Lake District’s tamer faces but whether you’re here to explore the local surrounds or will adventure further afield, they work well as a base. They’re luxurious for people who usually camp, a breath of great-value fresh air for those who are used to self-catering cottages and for glampers? You might say they're the pick of the bunch.

This was a gorgeous little pod, it was absolutely immaculate and really nicely decorated. The location was perfect, with stunning views. And everything you could possible need was provided by Carol and Howard who were so lovely. Absolutely loved our stay, we wish we could have stayed longer! We can’t wait to go back!

Everything about it was beautiful. You cross a little stream to get to the pods and the pods are amazing. Very cosy with beautiful views of the lake district. I was welcomed with the usual complimentary tea and coffee but the added extra of crumpets milk and a bottle of prosecco which was a very nice surprise. Bed is very comfortable and the shower is amazing! Also they have everything you need for a fire pit/bbq including marshmallows. So convenient, just pop your money in the box and take your stuff. I couldn't recommend this place enough and I'm dying to go back. Thanks Carole and Howard.

Super cosy pod and friendly owners!
We had the best stay, Carole & Howard are super friendly and they’ve thought of everything. I wish we could have stayed for longer! The bed was super comfy and the duvet and sheets felt high quality and cosy. The pod has been finished to a really high standard. The area is stunning and the views are amazing. It was a little further from Windermere than I had anticipated but still a really great location. They even left chocolates as it was my partners birthday. Would love to stay again!

My partner and I had a wonderful 3 night stay in the pod! Beautiful surroundings, very polite and pleasant hosts and were very helpful in helping me decorate the pod as a anniversary surprise! We thought the choice of a hamper was a nice touch and we made lots of use out of the fire pit each evening. We will definitely recommend staying here to friends and family. Many thanks for having us!

Nearby attractions

It's the Lake District National Park so walkers, cyclists, climbers, wild swimmers, kayakers and sailors are spoilt for choice. A recommended local walk starts a five-minute drive from Damson View up Gummer's How, which offers a spectacular view over Lake Windermere and across to Coniston Fells. Ask on site for more recommendations. It's only a 15-minute drive to the tourist attractions of Bowness (six miles away) and Lake Windermere. Perhaps hop aboard a steam boat with Windermere Lake Cruises at Bowness and cruise round to Ambleside. Back on dry land, Grasmere is a little further (15 miles) but definitely worth a visit, with more fabulous walks like Helm Crag, Loughrigg and Rydal Water (to name just a few), as well as Sarah Nelson's Gingerbread Shop. If you prefer something a bit less energetic then you could visit Levens Hall (01539 560321) which has fantastic gardens and topiary, Sizergh Castle (01539 560951) or Blackwell Arts & Crafts House (01539 446139) which are all within 10 miles of site. For nostalgia lovers, we would recommend catching the steam train at Lakeside & Haverthwaite, which can be combined with a lake cruise.

Food and drink

A little welcome pack with tea, bread, milk, butter and jam is provided for your arrival. The recommended Punch Bowl Inn (015395 68237), which serves food and great local ales is just a short stroll from the glamping pods. A little further away but also within walking distance are The Black Labrador (015395 68234) in Underbarrow, The Masons Arms (015395 68486) in Cartmel Fell and The Brown Horse Inn (015394 43443) in Winster (all around three miles from site).
