Spotted Fox Meadow

4 sites · RVs, Tents175 acres · Yampa, CO
This land has been my family's ranch since the early 70's. We love it here and are happy to share it with campers that wish to enjoy the valley and respect the land. More about this campsite: The site is in a small ranch pasture along the Bear River near willow, birch, and large cottonwood trees. From the campsite there are views of the Flat Top mountains and ancient volcanic necks. Very quiet except for ranch activity and the friendly livestock guardian dogs (who will visit, and they bark to protect the sheep and goats at night) - it's a working ranch and you may have to contend with talkative sheep or dodge the occasional cow pie!

Ute Lodge - At the End of the Road

11 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents300 acres · Meeker, CO
The Ute Lodge was homesteaded in the 1930’s by Joe Fox who after leaving the military came west to settle in the White River valley. Joe was known for his friendliness, hospitality and wild stories. Today you might find much of the same. From Joe’s day to today it is a place where families come together to get away. The Ute Lodge is now owned by Karl and Mona Maser who celebrated 20 years of ownership summer of 2019! All summer our cabins are filled with guests from all over the US as well as international travelers. One of our favorite things about the summer is our weekly potlucks where we all share an outdoor meal. All of our visitors have a standing invitation to join us around the community campfire at night. From our beautiful private lake (where you can paddle-board, kayak and fish), to immediate access to the Papoose and Crooks Park Trails on National Forest land, as well as the vast variety of wildlife that roams around, you can find what you need here to unplug and get away from it all.

Mountain Meadows

1 site · Lodging160 acres · Oak Creek, CO
Our 160 acre property is surrounded on all four sides by miles of National Forest. We recently built our cabin/house adjacent to Trout creek which runs through the property. This property was originally homesteaded in the 1800’s. An original two story cabin built in the 1890s still stands on the property. The logs in that cabin are said to have come from “The Meeker Massacre” (one of the last Indian uprisings in the west). We still hay the 60 acre meadow that has fed cows for many years on the property. Campers can expect to see all kinds of wildlife, from large moose to small chipmunks on the property. Hiking around the meadow is a favorite activity of campers, or just relaxing in a rocking chair looking at the beautiful views.

The best camping near Stagecoach State Park guide

Overview

About

Set on the banks of an 820-acre reservoir, Stagecoach State Park offers a mix of camping options, with electric and non-electric sites plus a couple of group campgrounds. The park is popular for fishing, due to its solid population of large rainbow trout and northern pike, and while summertime sees the most anglers, plenty of people come here in the winter to try their luck at ice fishing, too. Stagecoach is also a good place to try new things, and the park office operates a loaner program offering free loaner rods and tackle, horseshoes, fat tire bikes, snowshoes, and even GPS units.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for winter camping: Pinnacle Campground is open throughout the year and offers 20, 30 and 50 amp electricity.
  • Best for families: sandwiched between two day-use areas, Junction City Campground has plenty of amenities, with electrical sites, multiple water hydrants, and easy access to the park office.
  • Best for quiet tent camping: Harding Spur Campground features non-electric sites right by the water.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve a camping site through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife online reservation system or over the phone.
  2. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance and up until the day of your arrival.
  3. Some first-come, first-served sites are available in Pinnacle during the winter months. If you can’t get an online reservation, simply show up.
  4. Of the two group camping areas, one can accommodate 18 people, while the other has room for 36. Both can be reserved online or over the phone.

When to go

The best time to visit the park is between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the weather is at its warmest, though the reservoir is open to boaters from the beginning of May through the end of October. Early September is a good alternative if you want pleasant weather without the crowds, but temperatures tend to drop significantly by the end of the month, particularly at night. Snowy winters are also popular here, particularly among cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts.

Know before you go

  • The small city of Oak Creek is less than a 15-minute drive away.
  • While Pinnacle is open year-round, water facilities (showers, drinking water, and the dump station) are closed from the beginning of October through mid-May.
  • Parking is not included in the price of camping reservations. All visitors must display a daily or annual Colorado State Park pass in their vehicles.
  • Boat trailer parking is available in the marina parking lot.
  • Fire bans are common during the summer months, when the risk of wildfire is high.
