Pearl Lake State Park
This 166-acre lake is routinely recognized as one of the best canoeing spots in the US of A.
Boating on Pearl Lake is by human power only. No motors, just paddlers, plenty of fish, and campers nestled in the mountains. There are tranquil campsites with fire rings next to the water. Cooing owls or distant coyotes will sing you to sleep.
If this is your idea of the perfect getaway, head to Steamboat Springs and go north. It's about 23 miles to Pearl Lake from there. Summertime means plenty of native cutthroat trout to try and (sometimes) outwit.
BYOC (bring your own canoe) for a leisurely jaunt on the water. A hiking trail takes you along the shore and then into the adjacent national forest. That's where you can get friendly with the firs or personable with the pines.
Fall means fantastic foliage. In winter the roads close. That's okay. You can still snowshoes, cross country ski, or snowmobile.

Let's face it: setting up tents is a lot of work. All those weird flexible bars and flapping fabric waste valuable time that could be spent drinking a brew in the sunshine and paddling around doing your best Davy Crocket. Book a yurt and let someone else do the work for you while you drop off your bags and hit the water or the trails right away. I Read more...
