We are an intentional community of people dedicated to Conscientious, reflective, and sustainable living. We are not trying to create a counter-culture or a separatist society but rather a new way of existing within the current society grounded in these principles. 7 of us live on five acres and take care of the property together. Our name, The Lavra, comes from the Greek word for the place where lives come together, a sort of intersection of souls. In the late Roman monastic tradition, monks living within this model each had their own 'monastic' cell or hermitage, but came together for occasional meals, social interaction, and common spiritual life. Together, they created an environment that supported spiritual growth, efficiently managed scarce resources, and built a new kind of loving and peaceful community. As America changes, we are hoping to resurrect our model of living, adjusted and tailored for the contemporary world. We all have our private space but come together to support each other and share resources. We have a large main house where we all congregate for a weekly community meal. We also have a few other interesting buildings where community members live including a yurt, a studio building, and what we call the "mushroom." We make goat cheese, grow vegetables, and make our own beer and wine. We enjoy hosting volunteers from around the world, as well as guests or people just interested in communal living.
